Lunch at Le Bon Georges

The last stop out of Paris in a way and what a stop this can be for a lazy Sunday lunch ahead of the return to London. Eurostar should do this as part of their VIP packages we feel

• 2019 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang 92 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Vin de France

  Having had the 2019 “Etc” which was a dud we felt ( 90-91?) the lovely Pur Sang rolled it full of charm and expression. Pretty , touch less mineral and more on the fruit, stone fruits, light citrus. Short on the finish though and albeit we wanted it to scream it was a bit subdued. Is it a 2019 thing? Pretty 92 for sure but with questions here ( and worries over longevity)

• 2010 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Sec 91 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

  Full on expressive nose , bright , sings in a way but also maybe tries too hard. A wine we would have never gone for and grateful our friends put this on the map for us . Dry but at times with an offdry feel , very pretty aromatics and a very good expression. Good 91-92

• 2018 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 95 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  The sommelier at Le Bon Georges , Paris came back from the cellar and she said I have this off the list. Boom.
  The wine is young but is also a masterclass and yes one feels this has so much more to give and evolve but frankly it is great now ( akin to having a young d’Yquem we might argue that one knows it will grow but one does not regret either) . Elegant, harmonious expressive but also not shouting , it’s on the softer side of the tannic spectrum but not a light wine. Lovely stuff and what a joy. We rarely rate young wines this well but this so deserves it. 94-95 easy and with a lot more to deliver

• 2014 Domaine de la Côte Pinot Noir La Côte 93 Points

  The third time we have this in the last year ( once again at Le Bon Georges , Paris) and once again beautiful. Funny how framed more restrained wines it sort of looked a bit “slutty” a bit more obvious and very much expressive and even over-trying. Beautiful wine though full of joy and drinks easily at peak now but with Lora of life ahead. 93-94

• 2014 Cristom Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard 93 Points

  USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

  What a beautiful surprise here on account we have had very little exposure to these wines and definitely something we need to change. Very much Burgundian and framed vs the first 2014 La Cote with its colitis side ( Papies 93-94) this was almost shy and closer to the magnificent 2018 Lavaux St Jacques of mr Rousseau ( Papies 94-95). Light earth, restrained dark fruits , harmonious and ever so elegant . Very beautiful 94

• NV Henri Giraud Ratafia de Champagne Solera 90-16

  Solera 90-16, From a 4.5L Bottle at Le Bon Georges Paris.
  What has now become a tradition to finish . From its bluish colour to its sweetish palate , it’s not heavy but it’s not light either and just flows over tired palates with ease. This is its perfect place when a spirit is too heavy to finish this just plays the right tune.

• 1976 Lhéraud Pineau des Charentes Année Exceptionelle

  France, Cognac, Pineau des Charentes

  We think Le Bon Georges in Paris bought all the 1976 production cause this always makes its entrance at the end of great lunches there almost uninvited but almost always as a “something special”. And it’s pretty much like our earlier note like a lighter and juicier cognac . Pretty for sure .
