  • 2012 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles Château Grenouilles 84 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Liked though didn't love this. Shows some nice development with some toastiness and light smokiness on the nose, and a core of fairly tart pear and citrus fruit beneath. But it also feels a bit light on the palate, the back end feels somewhat hollow and abrupt and leaves me wanting more. Wonder if this may have been a bit too cold when served.

  • 2018 William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Some weirdness on the nose initially, hard to describe but it's high toned and almost a little varnish-y at first. But that blows off with about 5-10 minutes in the glass and some swirling, and what's beneath is textbook Chablis. Ripe Meyer lemon and other citrus fruits with a firm mineral base and bright acids, pleasant though not overly complex and relatively one-note, for me underwhelming given the site.

  • 2020 Tement Morillon Grosse Lage STK Ried Zieregg 90 Points

    I'm with vulgar little monkey on this one. Really nice wine with bright fruit (I noted pear and citrus) and a light mineral edge, some faintly toasty notes on the nose hinting at some oak as well, zippy acidity beneath. But at the price, LOLNO. I'll have to try the base Morillon/Chardonnay soon as I like the raw materials and overall balance here, but this bottling is a terrible value.

    Really nice showing, one of my favorites of the night. Really pretty aromatics, brightly fruited with a chalky mineral edge and faint floral elements, and a palate presence that's broad and silky, showing plenty of richness but also nicely lifted by good acids.

  • 2018 Rapet Père et Fils Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille Blanc 91 Points

    First of two bottles served blind in the same flight, alongside the Olivier Leflaive P-M. These were remarkably different. This one (2.2) shows much richer; silky and polished on the palate with nice weight and richness, plenty of bright fruit and a faint buttery sweetness on the back end.

  • 2018 Rapet Père et Fils Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille Blanc 87 Points

    Second of two bottles served blind in the same flight, alongside the Olivier Leflaive P-M. These were remarkably different. This one (2.3) shows much leaner; the pear and apple fruit comes through more and the wood feels less integrated - there's a slightly coarse, raw woody element that sticks out and doesn't harmonize with the other elements here, and the whole package seemed slightly unbalanced because of it.

    Found this tired and faded, wondered if this was a premox issue - but on the reveal, perhaps it's just showing its age. Stale apple cider flavours and some oxidative nuttiness, not a whole lot going on here.

    Also found this rather flat and tired, wondered about premox as well. A rather sherried nose; lots of oxidation and toasted hazelnut with some faded apple compote flavours beneath.

  • 2018 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

    Love the freshness and sense of energy here. Tart, bracing pear and citrus fruit up front, and then it turns all rocky and steely on the back end. There's also a slight oaky/buttery sweetness here that hasn't fully integrated, right now it's a little distracting and sticks out on the back end, but perhaps with air or time this will settle more and I imagine I'd like it a lot more then. But I really like the raw materials here and overall sense of balance.

  • 2016 Domaine du Château de Meursault Corton-Vergennes Blanc 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Very pretty; plenty of ripe white and yellow fruit framed by deft oak elements that add complexity without distracting, and a gentle vanilla-butter sweetness on the back end. It's quite silky and broad on the palate, I'm left wanting just a touch more acidity but overall this is lovely and one of my favorites of the evening.

    Terrific wine. All those delicious older Sauternes flavours; orange marmalade, ripe tropical fruits, vanilla, and a faintly dried citrus peel-like bitterness on the back end that keeps some of the sweetness in check though also suggests this may be on the downslope. But it's wonderful to drink now, and excellent with a cheese plate. Probably my favorite wine of the night (what a shock, an '86 Cordier wine gets my WOTN vote again).
