  • 1997 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    First impressions was that this was a old vosne but the slight residual sweetness bugged me a little. Bouquet completely enthralling with dried roses, dried apricots and asian spice. Incredible freshness with great concentration and silkiness, moderate acidity with grippy tannins thought this could have been from a strong vintage like 1996 and I thought this was an example of a great Vosne producer. Admittedly, I would never have pegged this for a CDP! WOTN for me.

  • 1985 Joseph Drouhin Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé 94 Points

    First pour of the night but was told it might be a risky bottle. Loved this from the first nose, bouquet had such sensuality and allure that only aged burgs can bring. Loved the fruit and concentration in this with red plums, dried roses, violets and dried cranberries coming to the fore. Thought this was lovely balanced today with concentration and elegance - liked this one quite a bit!

  • 2012 Simon Bize Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    First impressions led me away from burgundy but palate quickly brought me back. Exotic nose but classic palate for me. Pretty expressive with tropical fruit, exotic spices and yellow peaches with starfruit and yellow peaches on the exit. Good intensity and concentration but would have liked more precision and elegance.

  • 2016 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Definitively broader and linear compared to the Simon Bize. Nose and palate initially slightly reticent that needed more coaxing. Pomelo and grapefruit evolved into sudachi rind, smoke, blood orange, white peaches. I liked the intensity and balance between heft, concentration and lift. While a tad too young today, 2016s have been highly variable for whites and I'd probably gamble with this one and pop my next bottle in 5 years, all while praying premox doesn't hit.

  • 2010 Maison Roche de Bellene Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    First time having this cuvee. Off the blocks, this had a ton of power and concentration - black fruits, licorice, smoke and sandalwood came through in spades with heft and concentration before hitting a patch of tannins. Classically Gevrey but I thought this to be 2012 and a plot with higher elevation - like a good latricieres or even ruchottes.

  • 2008 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 93 Points

    Actually liked this one over the Potel - Nose and palate showing barn-yardy with blood, iron and dark plums. Liked the concentration of fruit and density here probably because of some age on this, thought this was drinking lovely now but started to fade a bit in glass. Don't think I had this pegged for Loire - I thought a more animalistic producer like Dugat Py.

  • 1986 Château Pavie 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Always go with first impressions! Thought this was definitely Bordeaux when first poured and tasted in glass but tasting alongside the 2001 Giacosa Falletto brought out a bit more tannins than initially felt and gravitated towards the certainty that both wines in the flight must be nebbiolo. Nose and palate similar, showing off manuka honey, dried plums, roses and leather. Good power and heft, strong tannins and some sweetness. Once revealed to be Bordeaux, it was clear it was from the 80s with 86 right bank being the obvious guess (in part due to many 86s I've drank)

  • 2001 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Classically nebbiolo with roses, licorice, violets and persimmon dominating nose and palate. Thought this to be a top traditional producer but couldn't quite reconcile this to Giacosa, was confused between this being a Bartolo or a Rinaldi. Anyhow, this bottle was in great shape, didn't think this was that old but thought it was from a good vintage like 06 or 07.

  • 2010 Jean-Pierre Guyon Clos Vougeot 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Interesting one - wouldn't have pegged this for what it was. Guyon only changed styles in 2016 this transformation was clearly a showing of a duckling turning into a swan. Masculine and broad off the bat with cherry stems, violets and icing sugar. Had length and weight for sure but definitely in the pool of "ambiguous clos vougeot producers" for me tonight.

  • 1989 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Clearly bordeaux from the get go with loads of graphite, pencil, dark berries and plums. Showed immense balance between density and concentration - still felt pretty young. Went with 1996 left bank as a guess.

  • 2019 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne VV/R19 92 Points

    Arranged as a champagne flight midways - and preferred this over the Emmanuel Brochet. By no means am I as familiar with champagne but bouchard always shows quality. Lovely waves of citrus, almonds, green apples and brioche notes in rich and velvety fashion. Impressive focus and precision through the nose, palate and finish.

  • NV Emmanuel Brochet Champagne Premier Cru Extra Brut (2019) Le Mont Benoit 91 Points

    Comparatively leaner and shaper from the Bouchard but great intensity and texture. Orange rind, pomelos and pears dominate here with some residual chalkiness. Preferred the Bouchard today because that was more opulent but a good comparison

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Another one that was clearly bordeaux. Red plums, wet earth and graphite dominate here with touch of pyrazines. This came after the 1989 Baron, while this was showing more nuanced and more matured I thought this was classic 1990 left bank - initially thought this could have been a Pichon Lalande but 1990 Lalande was so terrible that I thought this would have been perhaps a Las Cases.

  • 2017 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 94 Points

    I think as a group there was an immediate gravitation to Dujac because the gent who brought this only drinks Dujac! Haha. On proper assessment, I thought this was more chambolle-risque but with vosne producer imprint. Nose and palate showed pretty fruit with good purity and concentration, this needed a bit of coaxing to unfurl the layers of strawberries, bayberries and safe. Tannins quite silky and this was drinking so well today - would never have guessed this was Meo - I was thinking 14 Hudelot Noellat.

  • 2000 Weingut Keller Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling Auslese 90 Points

    Thought this was drinking really nicely - age has helped tone down overall sweetness but felt that it was slightly thin mid-palate. Nose and palate similar with apricots, petroleum, dried mango and chrysanthemum flowers. Guesses round the table zoomed into Sauternes but this did not quite have that ripeness and would had have to be from a cooler region - I thought this was riesling, I knew this was not Egon Muller but having tried very limited Keller, I couldn't quite place this in that vein.
