Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2016 Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Opened and poured in the restaurant, and served very cold. The colour - deep yellow. An almost worrying level of yellow. On the nose - spiky oak, some grass, some lemon. On the palate - just stop worrying about the yellow and taste it. This is unashamedly oaky but it's good oak and there's no flab to this - it's precise, has lovely acid - the blade is sharp and well looked after. I imagine this will improve for some time, but i found it really enjoyable now, especially as we let it warm up a little.

  • 2006 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Double decanted at home and taken to the restaurant at fridge temperature. On pouring - the nose is to die for, earthy, just a hint of blood and bacon. The palate however - somehow awkward and disjointed. The elements are there but not singing together. Over the course of an hour or so it all starts pulling in the same direction, there's lovely fruit, great length, a kind of depth to it. The last sip was by far the best and I'm already missing it. Yum yum yum.

My sense is that this isn't on the downslope, but nor is it going to get much better.
