Really great vintage Brut. Sooooo young - this really could use another 5 years to start (10 if you have the patience). Wonderful bright acidity. Great creamy mouthfeel. Has not yet acquired any secondary complexity. If you like 'em young, lively and clean, you could pop one now...but the magic comes later.
Well it turns out this was only marginally better than the corked bottle. NOT my style of Burgundy. This thing was loaded with wood and astringent from over-extraction. I had heard that Laurent went easier on the wood for these lower cuvees, but that was not apparent from this thing. Would not be recognizable as Burgundy at this stage - maybe a marginal New World Pinot. I do not believe this wine will ever absorb all the wood and become a proper Burgundy. What a contrast to Drouhin's 2002 Beaune Premier Cru, which is a beautiful refined Burgundy (at around the same price). Glad this is gone.
Really nice earthy, sous bois profile. Oddly, one taster who was unaware what the wine was declared it tasted like a nice Chateauneuf. And I could see it too. Lovely medium weight. Beautiful fruit with nice secondary complexity also. Went very well with some grilled lamb and fixins.

2002 Dominique Laurent Beaune Vieilles Vignes 81 Points
