    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Isonzo

The nose is vibrant and crystalline with flowing tones of pears, green apples, white fruits, peaches, nectarines, saline, and white fruits. There is good depth with a real sense of style that sticks out in this big setting. The Medium bodied feel shows off the vibrancy and depth of the nose with crisp, medium+ acidity that packs a little bit of punch right now. This is really sexy and vibrant with a freshness that really sticks out in a crowd. I’d love to try this with just a bottle in front of me.

The nose is a bit simple and upfront with tones of sweet peaches, pears, white flowers, green apples, and some sweet lemon notes. The Mesium/light bodied feel is balanced but showing a similar simplicity as the nose with medium acidity. This is fine and inoffensive, but not really much more.

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

The nose is fresh and vibrant with tones of lemon peels, white fruits, pears, peaches, saline, and crushed rocks. There is good balance and expression, but the tones don’t dig too deep. The Medium bodied feel is deft and balanced with tart, medium+ acidity. This shows off a fun and fresh side, but it doesn’t hit that extra gear of depth or complexity that would take it up a notch or two.

  • 2021 Azienda Agricola Borgo Conventi Collio Friulano 87 Points

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio

The nose is fresh and balanced with tones of lemon peels, pears, white fruits, peaches, sweet citrus notes, and a touch of white flowers. This is open-knit and fragrant, but a bit simple and lacking some depth. The Medium/light bodied feel is fresh with racy, high acidity. The acidity is a bit too steely and tart given the lack of weight and complexity. This is a nice and fragrant wine, but it doesn’t bring an extra gear or two.

Flight 2 - Tuscany (5 Notes)

  • 2019 Castello di Querceto / Querceto Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Picchio 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

The nose is perfumed and sumptuous with well balanced tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, ripe plums, sweet tobacco, savory herbs, smoke, dusty notes, and a good dose of violets. There is a headiness to the nose that is intoxicating while this shows off a good bit of class. The Medium/full bodied feel is refined and balanced with tart, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium+ tannins. The structure is quite youthful but it isn’t dominating right now. This has a lot of ability to kick into another gear with another 5+ years of aging.

  • 2019 Castello di Querceto / Querceto Chianti Classico Gran Selezione La Corte 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

The nose is a little tight, but with a few swirls it opens up into tones of dark red cherries, plums, sour cherries, raspberries, licorice, roasted herbs, and some violets. There is good depth and a savory side that is quite attractive. The Medium/full bodied feel is deft and refined with tart, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins that show some youth. There is excellent structure that is a bit deceiving as the tannins really sneak up on the back end. Time will be this wine’s friend as it shows good complexity, but also a bit wound up right now.

  • 2018 Il Borro Il Borro Toscana IGT 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

The nose shows off a savory side while also showing off balanced tones of dark red cherries, cranberries, raspberries, spice notes, tobacco leaf, pyrazines, and some herbs. There is very good depth with a restrained juiciness to the tones. The Full bodied feel is balanced and robust with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. The structure has some clear youth, but it doesn’t overpower too much. This will certainly need some time to fully balance and round out and I can see it really improving with another 5+ years of aging.

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

The nose is deft and balanced, with a savory backdrop to the tones of sour red cherries, licorice, a touch of wood spices, cranberries, savory herbs, and leather notes. The oak pokes through a bit too much for my liking while it also lacks some complexity. The Full bodied feel is polished and a bit slick with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins that have a bit of woodiness to them.

The nose is heady, perfumed, and lifted with fresh tones of morning dew, bright red cherries, strawberries, roasted herbs, currants, savory spices, and a touch of earth notes. There is excellent depth and seamlessness to the nose that is straight up gorgeous. The Full bodied feel shows a good bit of elegance, even with more upfront red fruits along with possessing tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure is youthful, but it shows off a slightly more forward take due to the vintage. This will certainly benefit from more aging, but it doesn’t come off as a long term ager.

  • 2019 Lodali Barbaresco Lorens 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

There is a distinct minerality that strikes right off the bat while showing a subtle perfumed quality to the tones of red cherries, red berries, strawberries, crushed rocks, fresh herbs, spice notes, and a whole bunch of violets. There is good depth and while there is complexity, it seems to be holding back a slight bit. The Full bodied feel is fresh and well balanced with tart, high acidity and youthful, high tannins. Here, the structure is a bit punishing. This will certainly need a few years, at the least, to show itself and open up into what will almost certainly be a beautiful Barbaresco.

  • 2018 Lodali Barolo Bricco Ambrogio 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

There is a real soulful quality to the nose while with a red-fruited freshness to the tones of strawberries, red cherries, red berries, fresh herbs, crushed rocks, mint leaves, rose petals, and some wild flowers. The Full bodied feel is so well balanced and refined with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is balanced and forward with dark red cherries, raspberries, cranberries, tar, licorice, roses, and some potpourri notes. There is a nice and airy quality to it, but it lacks some depth and freshness. The Full bodied feel shows off the balance and forward qualities of the nose along with tart, high acidity and slightly stiff, high tannins. This is a good Barolo, but it just isn’t all that interesting for showing off as much complexity of other and better Barolos.

There is good depth with a friendly, open-knit style that brings you into the glass. The Full bodied feel shows off the purity of the nose with tart, high acidity and silky, yet youthful high tannins. This is a pretty, young Barolo that can really blossom with some age. It doesn’t feel like a long-term ager, but it should provide a lot of joy for the mid-term.

  • 2020 Masseria Frattasi Capri Capri Rosso 86 Points

    Italy, Campania, Capri

The nose comes off a bit simple and with a major tomato leaf note that is pronounced. Behind it are decent tones of red cherries, raspberries, roses, earth notes, and some funk. The Full bodied feel shows off the simplicity of the nose with medium acidity and medium tannins. Past the tomato note, this is a solid and inoffensive southern Italian red.

    Italy, Campania, Beneventano

The nose is searching and savory with balanced tones of dark red cherries, licorice, raspberries, savory herbs, a touch of oak, currants, violets, and a touch of purple florals as well. • 2020 Azienda Agricola Sciara Terre Siciliane 1200 Contrada Nave 92 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

The nose is perfumed and leaning hard into the red spectrum as it fills the glass with strawberries, raspberry liqueur, right red cherries, red fruits, currants, smoke, licorice, violets, and roses. There is excellent depth and while this is fairly red-fruited and open, it also feels like it is holding more expression back. The Medium bodied feel is poised and elegant with tart, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. The structure shows off some youth, but it isn’t too overpowering while it shows off excellent texture and a lengthy finish.

  • 2020 Azienda Agricola Sciara Terre Siciliane 980 89 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

The nose shows off a darker presence than the 1200, but there is also a noticeable oak presence that isn’t overpowering, but it’s also certainly there. Behind that lie balanced tones of currants, dark red cherries, raspberries, violets, savory spice notes, vanilla extract, herbs, and some roses. The Medium/full bodied feel has a plushness to it with crisp, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium+ tannins. There is a slight woodiness to the tannins that is distracting. I would love to know what this would be like if it was left to be more pure and expressive as it shows off its own distinct personality even with the extra lipstick.

  • 2020 Azienda Agricola Sciara Etna 760 92 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

The nose is perfumed and showing much more of the red-spectrum ala the 1200m with succulent and flowing tones of red cherries, kirsch liqueur, raspberries, a touch of smoke, currants, licorice, rose petals, and some hibiscus notes. There is excellent depth with this showing so much poise though with a fatter quality to the tones. The Medium/full bodied feel is balanced and poised with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The structure has some clear youth, but it isn’t too dominating while the feel shows off some of the fatness of the nose. This is expressive now, but it feels like it can really open up into something gorgeous with time!

Flight 5 - Eastern Coast-Abruzzo and Veneto (8 Notes)

  • 2021 Terraviva Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 89 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

There is a noticeable hit of reduction that strikes right off the bat but then gives way to fresh tones of pears, stone fruits, melon notes, apples, acacia flowers, and a touch of smoke tones. There is an open-knit style to the nose that is inviting while the reduction does permeate a little more than I’d like. The Medium bodied feel is fresh and balanced with crisp, high acidity that has some integration. This is a fun and fresh Trebbiano that hits the notes it needs to hit, but doesn’t push it much further.

  • 2021 Terraviva Pecorino Abruzzo 91 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Abruzzo

  • 2020 Terraviva Montepulciano d'Abruzzo CO2 87 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Bubblegum notes strike right off the bat with fresh and more surface tones of red cherries, strawberries, red berries, herbs, earth notes, and rose petals. The nose is a bit simple and as noted before, the tones sit more on the surface. The Medium bodied feel is fresh and upfront with lip smacking, medium+ acidity and medium tannins. This is an easy drinking Montepulciano that is good enough, if a bit simple.

  • 2020 Barba Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane Yang 90 Points

Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane

The nose is fresh and upfront with vibrant tones of blueberries, raspberries, liqueur notes, currants, red cherries, fresh herbs, and rose petals. While this isn’t the deepest wine, there is a lovely seamlessness to it. The Medium/full bodied feel shows off the freshness of the nose with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This is very good and shows off some fresh, semi-juicy fruit but holds it all well.

  • 2019 Barba Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I Vasari Old Vines 86 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

There is a noticeable tomato note that hits right away before leaning into tones of red cherries, cranberries, fresh herbs, spice notes, and some roses. The tomato note is distracting while the fruit comes off as slightly simple. The Medium bodied feel is balanced, but still simple with crisp, medium+ acidity and stiff, medium+ tannins. This is fine enough. It comes off as a bit simple and the tannins are a bit rough-edged to where this is more than fine to have as a mindless wine in some random Italian restaurant, but not much more than that.

  • 2017 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera 89 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

The nose is rich and balanced with tones of fresh roasted coffee, licorice, liqueur notes, black cherries, black raspberries, dark chocolate, and violets. There is decent depth, but this lacks some complexity compared to better Amarones. The Full bodied feel is robust and rich with medium acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. The structure is there, but it isn’t overpowering. This is a very good Amarone that delivers what it needs to but not much more.

  • 2016 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera 90 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

There is a noticeable tomato leaf note that is distracting before giving way to tones of black cherries, spice cake, raspberries, bitter chocolate, raspberry liquer notes, and some herbs. The tomato note is bothersome and this lacks some of the expected complexity. The Full bodied feel is plush with medium acidity and silky, medium tannins. This feels like it is fully ready to go and it does show that tomato note across the nose and palate.

  • 2013 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Campolongo di Torbe 93 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

The nose is deep, layered, and with some restrained power to the tones of dark red cherries, black raspberries, chocolate cake, cranberries, Smokey spices, cigarette ash, herbs, raisins, and some plum sauce. This is what great Amarone is all about! There is so much complexity and depth while showing off excellent balance and poise. The Full bodied feel is rich, but in balance along with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The structure has balanced out beautifully, but it still has a presence. This is just gorgeous and shows off all of the hallmarks of a great Amarone.
