Wine Lunch

A long-standing suburban wine group had an available seat for lunch, and my Sunday schedule was accommodating.

• NV Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siècle Iteration 23 Grande Cuvée 94 Points

  France, Champagne

  Bright apple, lemon, and lemon curd aromas and flavors, subtle floral notes. Wonderfully rich while ever-so-slightly also tart in great combination/ juxtaposition. Very good weight, length, and textures.

• NV Krug Champagne Brut Rosé 91 Points

  Small glass. From before the “eme” era, this seemed like it was wine from the 1990s in terms of its freshness . Nicely rich and complex, even if slightly lacking much fresh fruit. Others liked this more.

• 2021 Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 90 Points

  USA, California, Napa Valley

  Small glass. Lemon and lime, faintly floral with a fair dollop of summer grass. Good+ concentration and depth especially in the rich middle, but a less finessed finish. Good now, prob better in a year or two.

• 2012 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain 92 Points

  Small glass. Rich and dense stone fruit, both fresh and dried, but always also bright. Works so well today with slightly spicy food. On the sec side of the sec vs demi-Sec continuum. Very good now.

• 2013 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

  Small glass. All apple, Both bright and rich with spices throughout. Great balance and grace, even if not quite showing the density I’d hope to see from Grand Cru.

  Ripe black and red cherry throughout, still firm to start, this slowly opened up, and even then with great reluctance. Patience will be rewarded.

  Candied black and red cherry, this is quite a contrast to the Lambrays 2009 begrudgingly showing off its charms, this wine is fun, showy and voluptuous, hiding nothing from sight. very fun now.

  Mature red cherry, earth, braised meat, and tobacco notes. Certainly nearing the end of its peak drinking window, but still holding its own well enough.

  Vintage softness comes through more than Bonnes MAres pwer here, but with classic ferrous, minerally textures throughout. Well balanced, good now.

  Ripe with good depth, but the oxidative style is front-and-center for me, with a pronounced tart edge from the middle forward.
