Couvent des Jacobins - Beaune

Black and red cherry start-to-finish, this rich and lush now, but with structure in near perfect harmony. Woodsy, meaty spice on nose and finish bodes well for what will emerge with more cellar time.

Good but atypical for this wine in this vintage, very unforthcoming and almost muted. Imperfect bottle?

Very rich, very fun black fruit with meaty character, very well balanced already now.

Lean black cherry and berry with good volume, this is still an awkward teenager with further upside as it matures.

Rich black cherry starts off as fleshy and ripe, then brightens up reasonably well from middle forward with more classic meaty and mineral Gevrey character. Another very good Jadot 2003.

Roasted meat with broad array of fresh and maturing black fruits. Great balance and good+ depth. I'm glad I brought this, since the other 2002 was corked.

Lean black fruit with good combination of meat, spice, and structure in good harmony. I think this is where the 2008 tasted earlier will emerge in a few more years.

Bold black fruits, this is both brawny and elegantly well balanced. Very good power, volume, and depth. Great now. Best I can ever recall for this wine that I have greatly enjoyed through the decades.

Also lean and classic black fruit with faint meat and earth, this was a small step up over some of the similar, younger vintages such as 2001 and 2008 today, or maybe the extra time is just what this needs.

Two nearly identical bottles from the Jadot cellar. Nicely mature black fruit with some forest floor, mushroom, and braised meat. Aging gracefully, but no urgency to drink up. Very good depth on long finish.

Both fresh (enough) and maturing black fruits in great harmony, along with sweet and savory spice in a wonderful Boeuf Bourguignon manner. So much here at its peak. My favorite wine of the lunch.

Fully+ mature, there is much more mushroom and earth than fruit, but there are ripe black and red cherry still lingering, even if only in the background. Slightly more interesting than yummy, but certainly still tasty. I have not had this wine in well over a decade, and it is clearly time to drink up.

From Jadot cellar, served alongside magnum from my cellar. Apple and caramel apple with good richness, good enough freshness, very good power. Not much surprise that almost everybody slightly preferred the magnum.

Magnum from my cellar that was served alongside 750 bottle from the Jadot cellar. Identical orchard fruit profile but fresher aromatically, even while nearly identical flavors, perhaps slightly brighter on finish.

Bright lemon and apple with very good depth and balance, and a charming, lingering finish. Very good now.

Rich and opulent orchard and stone fruits, much as would be expected from the vintage, but with enough energy middle-to-finish. Good+ now.
