Introduction
Another intense, two-day overview of recent vintages from California producers thanks to Family Winemakers. I tasted over 250 wines in the two days. Below are TNs on most of what I tasted, with the exception of some very good '07 barrel samples from Sojourn Cellars, which I'll post about separately, and some industrial swill that I didn't feel like creating wines for on CellarTracker.
I tasted more Pinots and Syrahs than anything, but also some good Gewurtzes, Cabernets, Merlots and red blends. Chards were a mixed lot, and the '06 Pinots remain a challenging vintage, although several here did as well as any I've tasted, including Ancien, Fort Ross, Halleck, Littorai, Londer and Mount Eden. New producers that I was impressed with included Ackerman, Black Kite, Charter Oak, EMH, Fantesca, Halleck, La Sirena, P.B. Hein, Parallel, Sequum and Vineyard 7 & 8. Best overall that I tasted were Clark-Claudon, Corison, Corte Riva, Dashe, Fantesca, Fort Ross, Halleck, JC Cellars, Lagier-Meredith, L'Aventure, Londer, Mount Eden, Orin Swift, Paloma, Parallel, Pride, Ramey, Tantara, Turley, Vineyard 7 & 8 and York Creek.
This was obviously a speed tasting. I made minimal notes, and gave scores mainly to help me identify my preferences in lineups, and my favorites overall. These are hardly the kind of thoughtful, measured scores I'd give if I were to taste the wine over a night or two. Nonetheless, they give some idea as to how I thought a lot of generally very good wines were showing on this particular date.
