Flight 1 - aperitif (1 Note)

  • NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Base vintage 2016, disgorged July 2022. Magnum. Pale salmon colour, very stylish, youthfully compact and energetic, silky, orange, minerals, strikes a lovely balance between compactness and generosity.

Flight 2 - Corton-Charlemagne (7 Notes)

  • 2016 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Very youthful and energetic, great minerally drive, compact but concentrated, perfectly integrated oak, lemon curd, very pure and clear, floral, excellent depth, tightly wound, almost Riesling-like acidity, palpable limestone minerality. I had not expected this razor-sharp style from this producer.

  • 2014 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Not nearly as precise as the Vincent Girardin 2016 which preceded it, slightly muffled on the nose, a bit honeyed, slightly bitter on the finish, aromatic green herbs. Disappointing.

  • 2006 Hospices de Beaune Corton-Charlemagne Cuvée François de Salins Henri Boillot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Final bottle from a four bottle lot purchased at auction in 2019. Beautifully evolved, gentle and flowing, rich aromatics without any trace of tiredness, balanced and harmonious, gentle bitters, oak remains well integrated, at perfect peak.

  • 2015 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Very youthful, almost embryonic, perfectly elegant, floral and fresh, very stylish, gentle bitters, very precise, slightly richer in style than the 2005 which accompanied it, orchard fruit, long and flowing finish.

  • 2005 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Release 10-10-2018. Wonderful depth and freshness and energy, lemon curd, slightly reductive, very powerful, citrus fruit, incredibly youthful, eucalyptus, tasting blind I would have guessed 2017, everything you hope for from Bonneau du Martray.

  • 2021 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton-Charlemagne 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Bottle No. 00397 from 1.975 bottles produced - around 10% (!) of the production on 2020. Rich and relatively open style, marvellous aromatic richness, deep and layered, wonderful finesse, rich and expansive for such a cool year, lemon curd, orchard fruit and citrus, much more compact than the 2019 and 2020, salty minerality, richly textured, long and playful, intense and long, perfectly integrated oak. A wine that touches your taste buds like Horowitz touched his keyboard. Vin d'émotion.

  • 2021 Millemann Wines Corton-Charlemagne 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Bottle No. 447. Immensely powerful and concentrated, mildly reductive, citrus and orchard fruit, so linear, wonderful dry extract, reminds me of Lamy-Caillat or Coche Corton-Charlemagne.

Flight 3 - Vosne-Romanée (8 Notes)

  • 1992 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Sex in a glass, ultra-refined Rayas from Burgundy, crushed red berries, fresh red meat and undergrowth, smooth and silky and sexy, layered and supremely elegant, perfectly fresh and lively, very gentle tannins, extremely long finish. Incredible quality for a village - and of this age. Grande émotion.

  • 2021 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Fresh and elegant, a bit obvious, flowers and almond sweetness from the slightly grippy wood, attractive but lacks gravitas.

  • 2021 Pierre Girardin Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Slightly reductive but also very seductive, juicy and supple but with refined tannic grip, beautifully composed, good power and drive, powerful and long. Extremely intelligent wine making.

  • 2021 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cuvée Duvault-Blochet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Bottle No. 00518 from 1,782 bottles produced. Salt and roses, ethereal fragrance and finesse, so pure and elegant but also a with hint of green coffee beans, energetic and long palate, perfumed, quite grippy but completely different from the blockbuster 2020, really grippy finish. Needs some time to find its feet - but I wonder about the coffee beans...

  • 2019 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Rich and deep, Asian spices, tightly worked but rich and concentrated, firm tannins, richly textured, smoky oak, rich and long finish. Textbook stuff.

  • 2013 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Grippy, floral, tightly wound, hint of candy, touch of red meat, cranberries, very much a 2013, tart acidity, long but dry finish. I don't get it, but that often happens to me when I taste Méo-Camuzet wines, and today was no exception.

  • 2010 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Superb freshness and elegance, playful and elegant, precise, firmly structured, complex aromatics, well integrated oak, exciting but completely sovereign, youthful, "ruht in sich", length and drive. Stunning wine.

  • 2008 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Very light and elegant style, ripe stems, expressive and transparent, elegant and flowing, refined tannins, long and layered finish.

Flight 4 - Dessert (1 Note)

  • 1973 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Piesporter Domherr Riesling Spätlese 88 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

From Weingut Domklausenhof. The label mentions "Domherr in Goldtröpfchen", a reference to the fact that this 4.3 hectare vineyard is an enclave in the Goldtröpfchen. Caramel and truffle on the nose, light palate wihout much sweetness or energy, quite drying on the finish, good length.
