Kevin and Vicki's 40th Wedding Anniversary

This was a stellar event put on by Kevin and Vicki to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Oysters and frites with the champagne and chablis, fish with the whites, duck with the pinots, steak with the bigger reds and baked pear with the Sauternes. Fantastic all around and I can't speak more highly of the food, wines and people in attendance. Congratulations Kevin and Vicki!

  Regrettably a small glass. This is a wow champagne to me. It's amazing that there is a depth and also a brightness at the same time.

  Small glass. I had this with the grand siecle 26, and I preferred the siecle. Still, difficult to assess. Maybe I should buy a bottle and drink the whole thing myself.

• 2007 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut 95 Points

  Small pour but consistent with previous note from a couple years ago. The color is a deep salmon. The nose is so interesting, with smells I can't even place. Good acidity on the palate, with some toast and a creamy midpalate that transitions to creamy finish.

  Small pour. Boy, for a 1er, this chablis is fantastic. Typical Fevre sea spray salinity with tangy fruit. Kevin, I hope you're right about the domaine vs non-domaine.

  This bottle drank just like one a year. The lime and minerality stand out and stand up to the full-bodied palate.

• 2014 Aubert Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons 96 Points

  Drank a medium-sized glass over 45 minutes. This wine really gets your attention with light butterscotch, lemon, white flowers and fresh green herbs. The balance between the full-body and the ample acidity is harmonious. I'm trying to understand the different Aubert bottlings because they sometimes seem typical California "big fruit, over-oaked" and sometimes like this bottle they are completely harmonious.

  Pop and pour from magnum, drank a good-sized glass over an hour. This is drinking well, balanced, integrated, and more in the California pinot style.

  Drank a medium-sized glass over an hour. Surprisingly acidic and also firmer tannins. Maybe its a bit shut down and definitely young.

  Unknown treatment, drank a medium-sized glass over an hour. Quite fantastic, fully mature, expressive, elegant and full of Bordeaux character.

  This was bested by a 1983 Pichon Lalande, but it held its own! Splash decanted. Earthy, good minerality, spices of cinnamon and pepper, saddle leather.

  Drank a small glass to end a great tasting. For being Yquem, this was fairly unimpressive. Still a nice wine but the person who brought the bottle and I agreed that this did not measure up to typical Yquem quality.
