Introduction

November 2024 marked my wife Dio and my 10th wedding anniversary, and among the highlights of our UK journey was lunch at The Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire. This legendary establishment has held three Michelin stars longer than any restaurant outside France – maintaining that distinction continuously since 1985. Since I'd be driving to Cliveden House afterward, I limited myself to just two pours – but what I couldn't experience in quantity, I made up for in conversation with their exceptional sommelier.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • NV Herve Dubois Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Lunch with a couple of by-the-glass wines @ The Waterside Inn. According to somm, this is 90% chard and 10% pinot noir. It has that light chardonnay minerality. Pinot brings a bit of fruitiness to the blend. Super fruity. Light burnt orange color. Good pairing with the various appetizers and bread.

  • 2010 Château Gazin Rocquencourt 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Lunch with two by-the-glass wines @ The Waterside Inn. Bottle was opened that morning before we arrived. It's the first day this bottle was on the by the glass list. Fruity and balanced. New World nose. Can definitely taste the merlot. Light tannin. Great drinking on its own before food came out. Dark fruit. Great pairing with steak main course.

Closing

Our lunch at The Waterside Inn delivered everything we'd hoped for and more. Beyond the exceptional food and wine, the experience was enriched by extended conversation with their knowledgeable sommelier about everything from Bordeaux bucket lists to Austrian wines to Atlanta's emerging dining scene. I'm already planning my return visit for a full wine pairing experience – with an Uber arranged for afterward!
