  • 2006 Dog Point Vineyard Section 94 92 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    I like NZ SB, and I liked this wine, but have a hard time seeing such lofty scores for it. Softer, rounder then the regular bottling, but with the tell tale NZ gooseberry notes of NZ SB. Must see a little time in barrel. Which means those who are looking for that bright lip smacking NZ slap of SB might be a little disapointed. This wine is coming out wearing stylish formal wear, and pulls it off. It's a beautiful wine. However, it's $40, and still NZ SB. For me, not my 1st choice if I'm picking out a $40 bottle of wine.

  • 2007 Bruno Giacosa Roero Arneis 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

    Still very good indeed, but I'm not sure I'd put it up there with previous vintages. Not as pretty as previous vintages, but still has a decent amount of richness. Long finish, with lots of floral qualities. If drinking for the first time, I'd probably be a bit more wowed, but previous vintages were so damn good.

  • 2005 M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Granits 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    My WOTN, for both red and white. Full, rich, but not heavy at all. I have little experience with Marsanne dominated wine, but this is easily the best I've had. Full of honeyed orange and yellow fruits. Carries a stony minerality as well. Luscious. A worthy wine for any occasion.

    This was nice, but didn't deliver anything extra compared to some other Austrian wine I've had recently for signifigantly less money. Light-Medium bodied, with lots of flavors other then fruit. Light tannins, this would work well with a variety of foods. Solidly made.

  • 2006 K Vintners Syrah Milbrandt Vineyard 89 Points

    Second K Vintners syrah I've tried in a week. Like the last one, surprised at the high acidty and brightness of this wine. Great blue fruits, that sort of moved around from the front to the back of the palate at different times. SOme characteristic smokey quailities also came out with time. Pretty aromatics. Not a beast by any means, but quite tautly built. Would like to try in a year or so. 89-90

  • 2005 Austin Hope Syrah Hope Family Vineyard 87 Points

    This is a big dense wine. Right now, showing considerable heat. There's a lot of fruit and smoke and other flavors packed in here, and I think with a little time this will be a little more harmonious. I had trouble getting past the heat and bruising nature of this right now.

  • 2004 BOND Matriarch 94 Points

    Red WOTN. Served blind. Wasn't sure what I was drinking, but was quite fond of it. Wouldn't have guessed Napa Cab. Even though there was loads of fruit, the slight earthiness and dry finish had me thinking anywhere but Napa Cab. This is drinking pretty damn nicely right now, and very seamless. While it isn't a WOW! wine for me, it's right up there on the top of the list of Napa Cab's that I've had. You don't always need terrior when you have great fruit and great winemaking. 93-94
