  • 2020 Claude Riffault Sancerre Monoparcelle 538 94 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Haven't had a memorable wine from this producer but this was a stunner. Monoparcelle 538 is the cadastral plot number for a 0.44 hectare plot of 47 year-old, massale selection Sauvignon Blanc planted on a shallow and gravelly soil in the lieu-dit of Les Desmalets. Perfect balance between richness and acidity, ripeness and freshness. Superb purity of citrus fruit that was more Burgundy-like, would not have guessed this as Sancerre if blind. So complex and long but in a compact way. A monumental Sancerre.

  • 2021 Fedellos do Couto Conasbrancas 87 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Ribeira Sacra

Similar impressions to the bottle from a tasting last year. Natty, low acidity with mango and melon notes, not my kind of white.

  • 2016 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Gravonia 91 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    (12/11/2024)

Wanted to give this a test drive. Others guessed Bordeaux white (perhaps from the bottle shape), but I said this was obvious if you knew the producer well. Painfully young with unintegrated coconut and creamy vanilla (I always get oak from young LdHs even though I understand that they don't use new wood). Became more expressive and floral with waxy citrus and marmalade notes. Needs a lot more time to integrate compared to the fantastic 2012 a few months back.

  • 2022 Domaine de la Roseraie Beaune La Montée Rouge Juvens 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune

    (12/11/2024)

Rather oaky and syrupy but not dense, so guessed 2019. Someone else guessed Chambolle but I was in Vosne because of the oak spice and sweet red fruit, a little too much polish without the structure for me.

  • 2022 Domaine de l'Anglore Tavel 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel

    (12/11/2024)

Opened for a friend who wanted to try. Quite different from previous l'Anglores that I’ve had - lighter; not as structured and serious. Superb lift and aromatics even though the VA became a little prominent with air. Both dreamy and intellectual at the same time.
