Introduction

This was the CdB Winter Parlement Event with a theme of 2000 Super Seconds. It was a great night with a very nice pairing menu.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2017 Leclerc Briant Champagne Abyss 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over 45 minutes. So, do you like a gimmick? Well here ya go. 1/3 each C, PN, PM, aged for 3 years on the lees, disgorged and bottled - then submerged in the Atlantic at 60m for 10 months. Never had this before, so it is fun to try, but is it any good? Sure, it's good, but is it any better as a result of said gimmick? While it is enjoyable, I'm going to say, not so much. Seems largely like a crock to me and just a marketing ploy. That said, there is plenty of minerality here though, and the zero dosage keeps it brisk, more lemon, citrus and lemon zest fruit, chalk, and mildly oxidative character. A solid Chapmagne, though for me it didn't justify the tariff.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2020 Château Cos d'Estournel Bordeaux Blanc 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Pale golden color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Very pretty and aromatic on the nose, brightly floral, peach, tangerine, citrus zest and wet stone. The palate is equally bright and fresh, offering a mix of citrus fruits; lemon, lemon zest and white grapefruit, wet stone and dried herbs. Very nice! 93+ to 94pts.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Cos d'Estournel 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Very dark red-purple color, 3mm transition to clear. Double decanted and slow-O for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over 2.5 hours plus. Love the nose here, as the pencil hits you with the first burst, then the leather, followed by some funk, and while the fruit is initially hidden, it very gradually unfurls to reveal the lush purple fruits. The palate is more open from the start; showing leather, bold dark fruits, spice, black and blue fruit, pencil, spice, and polished tannins. Very good and really just at the beginning of the prime window now.

  • 2000 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Very dark red color, 3mm clear edge. Double decanted and slow-O for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over 2.5 hours plus. More high toned, earthy, saddle leather, tobacco leaf, shellac, with muted fruit on the nose. The palate is dry, firm, and woodsy, with cassis and a more autere presentation. I kept waiting for this to open up tonight, but it just never really did.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Brane-Cantenac 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very dark red color, 6mm transition to clear edge. Double decanted and slow-O for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over 3 hours. CS42, M55, CF3. Well this is singing from the outset, with a wonderful perfume of rose and violets, pretty red berries, fine tobacco, subtle dillweed, and pencil. The palate is medium plus bodied, layered red berries, tart cherry, fine tobacco, soft and long with refined tannins. Loved it - right in the zone, but no hurry. This may not get a lot better, but it has another 15 to 20 years easy.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Barton 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and slow-O for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over 3 hours. This has a glorious woodsy perfume, dusty, violets, licorice, and over 20 minutes the ripe gorgeous fruits blossom with cassis and bright deep red and black berries. The palate has depth with gorgeous tannins, silky texture, pretty fruit, cassis, dark berries, licorice, and fine wood spices, full bodied and so long and deep. Really shining with tons of longevity ahead of it.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and slow-O for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over 3 hours. Oh my, this has a great nose. Fantastic, perfumed, leather, purple flowers, lavender, pencil, fine dried wood, lifted nose with brtight black and blue fruits. The palate is satiny, so full of energy, power, layered with gorgeous, sappy black and blue fruis, tangy berries, pencil, sneaky polished tannins, very long. This is outstanding, clearly WOTN for me. Even more to come. 96+ to 97pts.

  • 2000 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and slow-O for 90 minutes. Followed a glass over 90 minutes plus. One of the bottles turned out to be corked, so I ended up sharing a glass with my wife. That glass happened to be the end last pour so it was fairly heavily sedimented despite being decanted. That didn't help it any, but regardless of that, this was by notably the youngest and most backwards of the six wines tonight. Taught, lots of gravel, charcoal, dark fruits, grainy tannins, taught structure. The nose seems to open a bit with time, and it is trying to strut a bit, but it's like it has ankle cuffs on and just can't get going. Oh, it's there, just a matter of when. Last had this 5 years ago and said it needed a lot of time....that still holds true. Hard to score this with some tricky circumstances tonight so I won't really try, but last time I gave it 92pts, which seems about right. Give it a ton of air if going for it.
