Introduction

I was sitting around on sunday trying to figure out what to do, so I called some friends over to taste some wines on sunday. Cobbpa then came over on monday for some syrahs and cheese pairing experimention

Flight 1 - day one (5 Notes)

  • 2004 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 88 Points

    nose: sharp and focused nose of minerals, apple peels, white florals, and slate

    taste: tart with good acidity of green apples, minerals, white florals, and a bit of lime

    overall: a very good kabinett. Nice and tart and went well with the rosemary chicken that I had. Nice tart green apple attack and finish of lime and minerals

  • 1998 Silvio Grasso Barolo Bricco Luciani 91 Points

    nose: very pungent nose of menthol, tar, sour cherries, and bits of dark florals

    taste: rose petals and sour cherries hit right off the bat accompanied by tones of tar, menthol, and herbs

    overall: very pretty with fine grained tannins and excellent acidity. Nice smooth and refined attack of rose petals and a sweet finish of herbs

    nose: nice fat nose with tones of lemon curd, smokey tones, hazelnuts, and oil tones

    taste: good fat flavors of lemon curd, hazelnuts, oil tones, and various nuts

    overall: drinking great right now with nice rich golden color. Nice and fat feel on the palate with a lemon curd attack and oily finish

    nose: bright and lively nose of pears, minerals, quartz tones, and honeydew melons

    taste: very nice acidity with fresh flavors of pear, minerals, and honeydew melons

    overall: a really fun wine that can go great with a lot of food. Bright nose and attack of pears and honeydew finish

  • NV Domaine du Vieux Pressoir Saumur Rosé Fines Bulles 88 Points

    nose: good balanced nose with red cherries, rose petals, minerals, and some hints of baking spices

    taste: very effervescant with red cherry tones, minerals, and rose petals

    overall: this is a really good sparkling rose. Nice slight change from how a rose champagne would be and I would put it up there with a lot of rose champagnes. Good fat bubbles with a rich red cherry attack and mineral finish

  • 2007 Mahi Sauvignon Blanc 91 Points

    nose: very mineral laced nose with loads of rocks, snow peas, and various zesty citrus tones underneath. Very understated and nuanced nose that is more reminiscent of a sancerre rather then a new zealand blanc

    taste: nice soft and subtle mineral laced flavors of tangerines, tangelos, snow peas, and slatish tones with some other tree fruits

    overall: an extremely interesting sauvignon blanc. Understatement here is the goal with well balanced flavors and excellent tart acidity. This paired perfectly with some maryland crab cakes along with having a zesty tangerine attack and mineral based finish

  • 2005 Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard 91 Points

    nose: very tight and young nose, but what it does give is wonderful balance of rich cherries, blackberries, woodsmoke, mint, and even a bit of charcol. While still california on the nose, this is far from a fruit bomb and is very well balanced not overblown or very hot

    taste: very young as the tannins shred the mid palate(and this was decanted the day before for 6 hours and vacuvin'd) but still gives off rich cherry tones, camphor, blackberries, and a bit of mint in there too

    overall: I'm not going to revisit this wine for another 6 years. There is a lot to be excited about as there is a real balanced and rich verve to this wine with a rich cherry attack and smokey+blackberry finish

  • 2001 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 93 Points

    nose: beautifully balanced nose with celery seed, smoke, black pepper, black cherries, dark floral tones and some bacon fat. Still very young on the nose but the balance is just impecable

    taste: big amounts of black pepper upfront on the attack with earthen tones that transition deftly to black cherry tones and gives off a multi tiered finish of black cherry, vegetal tones, and tobbacco

    overall: this is a budding beauty. While still young, there is a lot going on with this wine. Superbly balanced nose with a big bold black pepper attack. It's the finish that makes this wine as it starts off with a robust black cherry finish, but then pulls a sharp turn with a vegetal transition to then another sharp turn to tobbacco flavors as it finishes down. The finish is a real fun adventure

Closing

A fun two days. Lots of good conversation was had over the two days and good wines. I was trying to figure out what to do drink for labor day and what to do, and it all worked out well
