Beat the 97 Roumier Bonnes Mares

Introduction

I put up my 97 Roumier Bonnes Mares bottle, and others brought a bottle to beat it.

  • NV Agustí Torelló Mata Cava Kripta Brut Nature Gran Reserva 92 Points

    Spain, Cava

    I brought this as a palate teaser and told everyone it was Champagne. Initial guesses were Grower and Meunier based Champagne. Once I said it wasn't Champagne, guesses went to Sekt and Franciacorta but never to Cava. Completely made with indigenous grape and comes in a very precarious ampule shaped bottle. Another point on Sparkling wine being all about winemaking rather than terroir or grapes.

  • 1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Second time having this wine in the last two years (thanks for PCLin) and this is still so elegant and poised. The fruit quality had this warm hug sort of feeling vs. the Roumier, which had a stony coolness. There's not much to add from the previous note other than it suffered a bit being on the same flight with the Roumier, and this time, it feels closer or at its peak than the one two 2 years back.

  • 1997 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 97 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    First wine served out of reds and from the get-go it was in a different league. Still tannic, surprisingly, dark red fruit with an intense concentration and a finish that goes on forever. The fruit quality had this stony coolness to it that never relented. I was telling Melvin that you can really taste the terroir, but the animalistic nature of the terroir is managed by the winemaking. It's such a beautiful expression of Bonnes Mares. This is what burgundy dreams are made of…this wine delivered on its expectations.

  • 1999 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    First pour tight, balsamic, VA….very Cerbaoina vibes on the first pour. I expected that it would gain elegance and shed its tannic properties with air, but instead, it gained sweetness and remained tannic. For current market prices of almost 2k SGD, there might be 2k better options than this.

  • 2013 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Sangiovese Toscana IGT 92 Points

    Was excited to try the pair of Soldera. Unfortunately both disappointed. This one was crazy sweet on the first pour. Nice but still crazy sweet like candy. 2nd and 3rd pour, it gained structure but the sweetness never subsided in my opinion. Not worth the current market price in my opinion.

    Smoky, dark, bacon and a hint of sweetness. This La Mouline is at peak and drinking ever so well. This wine to drink up but will still hold for a while at this level

  • 2008 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 85 Points

    JG scored this 87 points. Think I agree with his assessment. Initially for me, on the first pour was around 80 points. Nice nose but the palate…oh the palate had this watermelon bubblegum flavor that I have only experienced in entry level Spanish Grenaches before. 2nd pour a bit better but it was still watery and flat. Melvin shared this wine very generously so thank him for the experience.

Closing

I believe Roumier was WOTN unanimously. For me, it delivered a perfect mix of terroir and winemaking brilliance.
