Strand Cellars, Croydon

Off I toddled to strand to try the wines of Fighting Gully; I took along a bottle of FG Aglianico to throw in the mix.
Well, just like the tasting at the cellar door, that Smiths Chardonnay is the winner here. Pinot and Sangio get a nod in support
2023 Fighting Gully Road Verdicchio
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Touch of sulphur, citrus shows grapefruit, lemon, a little lime, slight pith. Juicy, tangy, very slight tart, more on the green side; again that touch of pith, touch of salinity. Meh.

2023 Fighting Gully Road Chardonnay
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Slightly peachy, touch of sweet spice, butter, tiny toasted note. Juicy, tangy, fresh stone fruit has an apricot note joining the peach, a little silky burr. Simple, balanced, nice.

2021 Fighting Gully Road Chardonnay Black Label Smith's Vineyard
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Toasted oak, a little bacon fat, stone fruit with a citrus underpin, slightly nutty notes. Juicy, tangy, slightly buttery, rich but still retaining freshness, touch of bitterness on the finish, very slight non intrusive alcohol warmth. Gained a little weight with time. Good.

2022 Fighting Gully Road Rosé
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Medium minus intensity aromas of savoury cherry, slightly meaty notes. Tangy on the palate, again a little savoury underpin to the cherry but with some bitterness. Touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.

2023 Fighting Gully Road Pinot Noir
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Pretty red cherry carbo crush(?) with a very slight savoury underpin lends this a simple but very pretty nose. Juicy, tangy, slightly bitter on the palate, fruit a little muted but still in that fresh cherry space, a little tannic rasp. Okay.

2023 Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese Beechworth
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Cherry has a savoury underpin, slight herbaceous, tobacco leaf notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, textured grip is drying but silky textured, that cherry note translates to the palate, touch of bitterness on the finish. Slightly out of whack. Hmm.

2017 Fighting Gully Road Shiraz
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Savoury black fruit peppery notes are reinforced by a little alcohol prickle, touch of green stalk whole bunch. It is a little tart and green with a touch of hollowness on the mid palate, fruit is present but non delineated, more red than black. Nah.

2017 Fighting Gully Road Aglianico
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Red plums, savoury spice, touch of pepper, a little dried flowers. Medium plus intensity acidity, red plums, drying tight tannins are persistent but not overtly coarse, slight alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

2008 Ivanhoe Gewürztraminer Late Picked
Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
A little toffee apple, caramel, slightly green notes, odd nose for the varietal. Lusciously sweet but with plenty of green apple acidity to offset, surprisingly simple for it's age, absolutely no typicity. Nah

2019 Fighting Gully Road Petit Manseng Moelleux
Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Slight citrus, surprisingly lean smelling. Medium plus intensity acidity is a little too much for the sweetness, touch of citrus, simple. Meh

2018 Andrew Buller Wines Shiraz Cannobie
Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen
Odd mixture of jubey and quite 'hard' smelling red fruits, sweet spice, very very slight wood glue. More jubey on the palate, pretty red fruit, controlled oak, light, balanced. Okay.
