Strand Cellars, Croydon
Tasted Friday, November 22, 2024 by chatters with 67 views
I was firmly ensconced at home when Phoenix gave me a call and said "come, I have burgundy" so I grabbed a bottle from the cellar and toddled off to Strand Cellars (for that is where he was)
Terrible face plant on the blind, shame on me. Bonus to try the Metala's which made me feel a little bit better.
2020 Derey Freres Marsannay Champs Salomon
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
"Served blind
Rich, concentrated, whole bunch/carbo crush, dark fruits; blackberry and little plum, oak spice, blood. Juicy, fleshy, lighter than the palate implies, non-intrusive alcohol warmth, bit out of whack.
Went with Burgundy, Pommard, 2017…shocking"

2013 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes-Maizières Vieilles Vignes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Plush, ripe, a little red and black cherry, cream, smidge of wood glue, slightly oxidised. Tart on the palate, acid is crunchy, a little red apple almost, sour cherry but with a pretty fruit sweet core. Happy I'm tidying this up.

1971 Metala Shiraz - Cabernet
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
Low intensity aromas show slightly volatile red fruits, biscuit, leather, slightly dusty. Dense, sourly juicy, alcohol warmth, silky tannins, slightly leather, touch of jammy non delineated red fruit.

1981 Metala Shiraz - Cabernet
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
Plummy, I'm guessing American oak - Vanilla, Caramel, cream, red and black non delineated fruit in the background, sweet spice. Juicy, fleshy, rich, earthy, silky though drying tannins, alcohol warmth, slightly sour underpin, non-delineated fruits.

1983 Metala Shiraz - Cabernet
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
Metallic, blood, sweet spice, non delineated red and black fruit, vanilla, caramel. Juicy, red and black, silky tannins better balanced on the palate than the last two wines still with that sour note.

Black plum and currant is slightly jammy, sweet spice, alcohol warmth. Sourly juicy, feels clumsy, drying textured burr, meh

1993 Metala Shiraz - Cabernet
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
Ooh, slightly funky, touch of Brett, dusty, earthy underpin, slight alcohol warmth, red over black fruits. Juicy, controlled red over black fruits, plenty of texture is slightly drying, slightly tart but the best of these so far, non intrusion alcohol warmth on the finish.

1997 Metala Shiraz - Cabernet
Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
Ooh, very slight cork taint, black and red berry, sweet spice. Juicy, black and red fruit, silky tannins. A little flat but not flawed - the cork taint doesn't show so much on the palate.

Cream soda, slightly mineral, non-delineated orchard fruit. Slightly tart, green fruit - greengages, silky texture, a little short. Meh.
