Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

  • 2022 Château Suduiraut Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the Old World wine served in the first comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a dry white wine from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux and is made from the Sémillon grape. The Sémillon is fermented dry, which gives the wine a rich, oily mouthfeel. It was intentionally served very cold, with the expectation that its texture and aromas would develop as it warmed. This wine was paired with the first course, which was Celeric and Apple Veloute.

TN: Almost a little tannic, strange for a dry white wine. Very nice and good pairing with the soup. I preferred the 2023 Quintessa Sauvignon Blanc Illumination served next to it.

  • 2023 Quintessa Sauvignon Blanc Illumination 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the New World wine served in the first comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a white Bordeaux-style wine from Quintessa. This wine is made with Sauvignon Blanc and its mutations, such as Sauvignon Gris. It is produced in Napa Valley and made with a series of wood regiments and concrete, which gives it more texture and less of a green flavor. It was intentionally served very cold, with the expectation that its texture and aromas would develop as it warmed. This wine was paired with the first course, which was Celeric and Apple Veloute.

TN: Brighter and more tart than the 2022 Château Suduiraut Lions de Suduiraut served alongside it. For this first round, I preferred the New World wine!

Flight 2 - Pinots (2 Notes)

  • 2022 Domaine R. DuBois & Fils Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the Old World wine served in the second comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a Pinot Noir from a small domain in the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges in Burgundy where the soil is so poor that only vines grow. It is distinctively more tart than the New World version, feels lighter, and has very high acidity. You get a very tart, sour red cherry, dirt and gamey flavor. The oak is typically folded in gently, so there is a little bit of vanilla but not so obvious. This wine was paired with the second course, which was really tasty black truffle and ricotta brioche.

TN: A little flat compared to the 2022 Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir Rosemary's Vineyard. For this second round, I again preferred the New World wine!

  • 2022 Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir Rosemary's Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the New World wine served in the second comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a Pinot Noir from Edna Valley, California. This wine is from Talley Vineyards, farmers in the area since 1948. It immediately jumps out of the glass with a sour cherry pie filling, and is a mouth-filling, rich wine that continues on. This wine was paired with the second course, which was a really tasty black truffle and ricotta brioche.

TN: More fruit and more tannin than the 2022 Domaine R. DuBois & Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières. For this second round, I again preferred the New World wine!

Flight 3 - Bordeaux Blends - round 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2017 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the Old World wine served in the third comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a Bordeaux blend from Saint-Julien. It features predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, but also includes a good amount of Cabernet Franc, which gives a bit of red fruit, and the blending grapes Petit Verdot and Carmenere. Unlike in Napa, Bordeaux wines require time in the bottle and have lower alcohol, more cloud cover and less sunshine hours and this can be tasted in the wine. The 2017 vintage was initially not popular in America, but is now considered to be fabulous and delicious. This wine was paired with the third course, which was lamb ragu cavatelli.

TN: Decanted an hour before the dinner. Classic old world nose and mouth. Less tannin than the 2021 Favia Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville served next to it. Great pairing with the lamb ragu. For this third round, I preferred this Old World wine!

  • 2021 Favia Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the New World wine served in the third comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville, Napa Valley. This wine is produced by Andy Erickson, a well-known winemaker from Napa Valley, and is from their Oakville property located on the valley floor. This wine was paired with the third course, which was lamb ragu cavatelli.

TN: It was fun to taste this wine again so soon after trying it at a tasting and dinner with Andy Erickson! Decanted an hour before the dinner. Lots of tannin - needs more air. Nose is very similar to the LLC. Great pairing with the lamb ragu. For this third round, I preferred the Old World wine (2017 Château Léoville Las Cases)!

Flight 4 - Bordeaux Blends - round 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the Old World wine served in the fourth comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a Bordeaux blend from Pauillac from the Château Pichon Baron Longueville property, which was once part of a larger estate that was split during the French Revolution. The Pichon Baron property was renovated in 1994 by the owner of Chateau Lynch Bages. This wine was paired with the fourth course, which was Entrecote steak café de Paris butter, frites.

TN: I believe this was decanted about an hour before the dinner started. Tannin resolved. WOTN. Great pairing with the steak and frites. This was much better than the 2021 Quintessa served along side it. For this fourth round, I again preferred this Old World wine!

  • 2021 Quintessa 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Wine pairing dinner at Le Bon Nosh comparing Old World and New World wines. This was the New World wine served in the fourth comparison of the evening. According to the Somm, this is a Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard contiguous site on the eastern spur, and is highly allocated. The first release of Quintessa was in 1994. The Somm shared that he had visited the Quintessa vineyard before the project was underway, and also notes that the vineyard is located on the bench of the eastern spur. This wine was paired with the fourth course, which was Entrecote steak café de Paris butter, frites.

TN: I believe this was decanted about an hour before the dinner started. YOUNG! Primary Red fruit. Great pairing with steak and frites. For this fourth round, I again preferred the Old World wine (2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron).
