Introduction

A couple times a year we get together and burn the pine wine boxes that have accumulated and depressurize the cellar.

Flight 1 (16 Notes)

  • NV Champagne Collet Champagne Brut

    France, Champagne

Another great showing. Classic, rich and nicely balanced, yellow fruit, gentle yeast, mineral lift, so solid and great QPR; sabered one and drank 3 bottles total.

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 244

    France, Champagne

After tasting all of the other wines this really hit the spot, cool fresh and focused delivering pinpoint richness and refinement, impressively fine bubbles, somewhat reductive and young, feels like a good portion of Chardonnay with the graphite, somewhat reductive toast and almond also provide depth; very good.

  • NV Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve

    France, Champagne

A touch deeper color, weighty yet fine bead keeping it lifted, more mirabelle to the huskier citrus and peach notes, a little red creeps in there too, solid sparkler that needs a quieter setting to peel back the layers but delicious overall.

  • 2014 Salmon Champagne Special Club Rosé de Saignée

    France, Champagne

Hard to get a lot out of this bottle, not super raspy and saignee in style but a touch more oomph than a blended rose, more pronounced red fruit, structured, could use more time and a less chaotic tasting environment.

  • 2016 von Winning Deidesheimer Langenmorgen Riesling Großes Gewächs

    Germany, Pfalz

Great showing for this wine, yes there is oak but but there is so much else going on here, basalt and volcanic soils, exotic fruit, pineapple, mango, bright and fresh, herbs, long finish; nothing overdone here and has staying power being so fresh at 8+ years old; delicious.

  • 2013 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ruppertsberger Gaisböhl Riesling

    Germany, Pfalz

This was showing some age and development but giving this some deep breaths allowed it to compose itself showing some honeyed notes, decaying and fresh stone fruit, diesel notes, the BW nobility emerges and this puts on weight and an acid spine; very good.

  • 2016 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

This is classic Mosel with an almost Kabinett lightness, I did not find this heavy or cloying at all, light fresh and probably some trapped CO2 keeping this light, focused acids, slate galore, this still feels young, glad to have a couple more- check back in at least 3 years; great on a cold night by the fire but probably needs a calmer environment to decipher all that it has to share.

  • 2008 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Nahe

Golden green in color; slight honey, jellied green fruit, almost custardy in texture but good lightness and driving acid from this cooler year, glazed peaches, ideal spatlese weight; very tasty.

  • 2005 Künstler Hochheimer Kirchenstück Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Rheingau

Deeper gold in color; fully developed, ripe and generous, getting into that bruised apple, some mineral sits atop, cider, tea, waning fruit that to me is a touch over but still full of pleasure, some others loved it but I wasn't thrilled with its showing.

  • 2017 Monteraponi Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Very expressive and stands out in this challenging year, lots of leather and sour red fruit, driving acids, two days later this shows nice terra cotta, dried herbs, suggests this could use a couple more years but probably not a long term ager.

  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Started off very shy and one dimensional, with more air this revealed lacier florals and pure red fruit, days later this shows darker richer cherry, slight plummy, a little herb and vegetal adds complexity, good yet prominent oak at this stage, deeper and more layered than first day and leaves me with a more serious impression than before, this tells me to let it sleep for at least a few more years if you have it…there is a DIAM 30 keeping it sound until you’re ready to pop it.

  • 2016 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Checking in, darker cherry, some sweet oak, tart plum, two days later this shows lots of volatility, not as good as I was hoping, fingers crossed on remaining bottles.

  • 2019 Daumen Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Good tartness and freshness on the first day, classic red fruit but turns darker with some air, herb, some chocolate, richer and some old vine weight; tasty and good QPR.

  • 2015 Château des Tours Côtes du Rhône Reserve

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

Paler red, unique color; classic Renaud, crabapple, very sour and tart, cranberry and pomegranate, vegetal yet not green, rose petals, botrytis?, funky and weird, tea and mushroom, acids are very sharp and Grenache bitterness a bit much first night, much better a couple days later, mean bottle or a wine that needs more time.

  • 2020 Lieu Dit Cabernet Franc

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

I was not thrilled with this bottle the first night being open, tart sour and pickled green bean dominated the flavor along with cranberry, pucker inducing sourness and herbal notes lacked harmony; now trying again 4 nights later this has calmed, the green notes and strong sour red fruit have settled in to show a varietally correct cool climate style of the grape variety, more interesting than delicious but may be a good one to follow.

  • 2009 Château Coupe Roses Minervois La Bastide

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Minervois

This is one of those bottles that isn't forgotten as much as I never had a reason to open it, was hoping for something aged and interesting and this was that, leather, Grenache bitterness, brick dust, mushroom, Brett is strong, sur plum, intense and kind of hard to drink but still very much alive.
