Introduction

A group of us gathered at Chez Dalluge for a little cellar depletion event on a snowy evening (DD, BB, SS, ML, LI, KB, DM). The goal was to burn through a bunch of wines, that may or may not be good, so that Dave would not need to move them to their new place in the future. Chez Dalluge is known for their hospitality and fine dining. Tonight started with a lovely crusted and seared tuna with wasabi foam. We then moved on to a long series of artisan pizzas with the A16 dough and sauce recipes. Needless to say everything was fantastic. Daughter Julia was also on hand to assist with the cooking and wine control project as well. We ran through a ridiculous number of bottles, but we found some real gems along the way. Thanks Dave for you generosity as always!! Great night.

Flight 1 (20 Notes)

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Édition 168ème 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. By far the best bottle of 168 I've had to date. This was riveting, with ultra-crisp character, sleek fresh cut juicy pear, tangerine, tangerine oil, river rock, toast, with a clarity and freshness that went on and on. No oxidative notes lurking. This feels fully in the zome now and an easy 95 and probably better. 95+ to 96pts.

  • 1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Oxidized, deep golden color. There's some hints of bygone days, but...

  • 2001 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes plus. Well, this was a winner, and in absolutely stellar shape. Wax, white fruit, melon, unripe pear, some sea breeze, a touch of apple, sea shells on the high toned nose. The palate shows fleshy fruits, apple, bitters, orange liqueur, peach pit, oily in texture, waxy, sea shell minerality, still bright and lively. Really fun, 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2014 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Puligny-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Light medium gold plus color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. I think this actually needed some air to unfurl a bit. The oak was still in force, though it tamed over time. Beeswax, shellac, oily, oaky, lemon wax, stone, a bit angular on the finish with white citrus notes. Not everyone was on board, but I think most liked this. Solid.

  • 2015 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bouzeron 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Bouzeron

Light gold color. Drank a small glass over 30 minutes. The nose has citrus and big burst of orange zest; while the palate is sort of weedy, herbal, citrus, Mandarin orange, good acid, medium bodied with good depth. Good, but not a big Aligote fan. Others liked this more than me.

  • 1998 Rosemount Estate Syrah Balmoral

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Dark red color. PNP, followed a glass for 20 minutes. I couldn't get past the overwhelming olive notes on both the nose and palate, cherry, medicinal, pine needles, a bit on the pruny/stewy side I thought too. I think this was off. No score.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Terre Rouge Syrah Ascent 88 Points

Small taste. PNP. I believe the word Dave used to describe this perfectly was: sploofy. Very ripe, garrigue, pepper, sweet pomegranate, and "sploofy".
