Introduction

Great to meet a largely new group of enthusiasts for what I hope is the first of many get togethers in Bristol

Flight 1 - On arrival (1 Note)

  • 2006 Mestres Cava Clos Damiana

    Spain, Cava

    65% Xarel.lo, 20% Macabeo and 15% Parellada. Fascinating and lovely wine. Less obvious fruit than many Cava, this has a subtle malted milk biscuit character to the nose with some dried flowers. Palate is fresh dry and complex with a lovely saline character, maybe a touch of toffee. Yum

Flight 2 - Bastilla - Moroccan spiced game pie of confit duck & pistachios with radish, blood orange, green olive & mint salad (2 Notes)

  • 2023 Marathasa Wines Xynisteri Athassi

    Cyprus, Limassol

    Mountain stream minerality, some smoked almonds. Palate is fresh, long and has a gorgeous mouth coating, oily texture. A twist of lemon zest emerges with air.

  • 2022 Domaine Gerovassiliou Viognier

    Greece, Macedonia, Epanomi

    Served blind. Some pear and peach fruit with hints of mint and nougat. Palate is fresh, long and has real bite. Very serious wine and better than many Condrieux, certainly at this price point.

Flight 3 - Bastilla Part 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2022 Marathasa Wines Syrah Marathos

    Cyprus, Limassol

    Maraschino cherry, some wild strawberry and a touch of Christmas spice on the nose here; very youthful and fresh. Palate is marked by the oak imprint but all feels in proportion. Nice stuff.

  • 2020 Domaine Richeaume Syrah

    France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

    Real mix of northern Rhone (olive brine and bacon fat) and something further south (Garrigue herbs) in this gem from The Wine Society. Palate has a lovely acid profile as well as some pillowy plum fruit. Really punching above its weight. Classy.

Flight 4 - Slow cooked ox cheek with grape mollasses, quince, cavolo nero and skordalia (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Thymiopoulos Xinomavro Gi kai Ouranos

    Greece, Macedonia, Naoussa

    Lovely nose here with earth, cèpes and, with air, some hints of chestnut brazier sweetness. Palate has a lovely brightness with some violets and some ripe cherry fruit. Vibrant acids too; the tannins have a way to go. Like this a lot.

  • 2021 Thymiopoulos Xinomavro Gi kai Ouranos

    Greece, Macedonia, Naoussa

    Brighter fruited than the 2019 of this wine that it is served with. A touch of cashew and sesame cracker too. Palate has lovely acids and a touch of strawberry shortcake to it but is a little shorter that the 2019. Suspect an age think; would love to try one of these with a decade's bottle age.

Flight 5 - Ox Cheek Part 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Double decanted 3 hours before drinking (threw quite a lot of sediment). 90% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache. Classical Tempier animale character on first sniff. Rich beefy core with some cocoa powder / drark chocolate notes. Also some lovely florals as this breathes. Palate is rich and well knit with the 15% alcohol not really making itself felt. There is some star anise and a touch of iodine too. Lovely stuff.

  • 2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Another lovely Tempier. There is dark cherry sorbet quality to the nose. A touch of Mocha and a couple of ppm of pine resin. Palate is similar with softening tannins and a touch of Madeira cake. Good stuff.

Flight 6 - Rich chocolate desert (1 Note)

Closing

The Lido was a great venue with a little more space and an extra floor compared with the similarly excellent Thames Lido in Reading.
