Introduction

Blind tasting of, what turned out to be, a Bordeaux-like wine that was not from Bordeaux proper vs a classic Bordeaux. Aperitif not included. Overall winner was the 2010 Chateau Batailly.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2019 Château La Garde Blanc 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Slight tinge of gummy-bears in the nose together with apricots. Generally quite bright and light. Unfortunately grassy and harsh on the palate.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Castelfeder Cabernet Sauvignon Burgum Novum Riserva 92 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

Still muted nose, seems closed despite a couple hours in the decanter. Tannins already quite round/velvety, but present. Vivid live acidity. Dark berry (blueberry) on the palate. Surprising presence on the palate for a pure Cabernet. Still a long way to go.

  • 2019 Château Calon-Ségur Le Marquis de Calon Ségur 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Muted nose, despite a couple hours in the decanter. With lots of effort one may find light roses in the nose, generally quite flowery. Jung, present tannins, but generally well integrated. Lots of oak that must mellow over the next years. Has a distinct "stew-spice" flavour that I couldn't pin down more precisely.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Knipser Cuvée X 89 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

Pinot noir on the nose, pinot noir on the palate. At least initially. Which is surprising as this has no pinot in it. Would have never thought this to be a Cabernet blend. If you exclude the possibility of pinot you'd first gravitate to Rhone, before considering Bordeaux-blend. Not a very impressive effort.

  • 2019 Château Robin Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

For the score, quite a lot of aroma. Surprisingly already some light tertiary notes. Very soft on the palate, light, not much substance.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Podere Il Carnasciale Il Caberlot 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

We thought this flight could be the same wine twice (a 2010 Chateau Batailley). Good effort for the wine. One of the high-points of the evening.

  • 2010 Château Batailley 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

We thought this flight could be the same wine twice (a 2011 Il Caberlot). Good effort for the wine. One of the high-points of the evening. Though I found that this was still too young to be properly enjoyed. (Though that might have been because we were drinking from a double magnum.)

Flight 7 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Chateau Musar 95 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

My WOTN, though beware that there is (as always with Musar) considerable bottle variation. We had four bottles in total that varied from classic clean Bordeaux nose to standing in the middle of a pig-sty. Light (from age) on the palate with small red berry fruit. Very enjoyable.

  • 1989 Château Talbot 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Considerable bottle variation with this wine. Out of three bottles one was flawed and the other two were quite different. The better of the two showed its age, but also that it had aged gracefully. Something you might not expect from an '89. Considering the Parker rating (of 87 atm) this punches above its weight.
