Simple get-together with Greg & Donna at our place.

Flight 1 - With appetizers (1 Note)

  • 2021 Tenuta Santori Rosso Piceno Superiore 90 Points

    Italy, Marche, Rosso Piceno Superiore

    Our first bottle of this vintage of this somewhat typical Rosso Piceno -- a blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano -- from Le Marche.
    Slo-oxed this bottle for 10 minutes and 20-30 would have been better (or a 15 minute decant). Dark red and some black fruit on both the nose and medium bodied palate, along with spice, minerality and a touch of earth. The acidity was juicy and balancing, and there was just a hint of tannin on the finish. It may be a bit early to open these as they may continue to develop in bottle, with several enjoyable years ahead.

Flight 2 - With the entree (1 Note)

  • 2013 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Slo-oxed for 20 minutes but a bit more air time is better. The color was dark purple to a faded rim. The nose put forth lots of dark fruits and earth. These dark fruits (black cherry, black currant & pomegranate) followed on to the medium bodied palate, along with some lighter red cherry and some spice. The acidity was juicy, but balancing, and there was just a touch of drying tannins on the medium finish. Could hold at this very enjoyable level for the next few years.
