Introduction

Anne brought the wine, I tasted double blind

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Pago del Vicario Vino de la Tierra de Castilla 50-50 79 Points

    Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

    Tasted double blind. Decanted for an hour. Appearance: this was very brown and murky. Looked over-aged (3/5). Nose: lots of fruit and very jammy, a powerful nose of cherries and cassis, very New World-styled (10/15). Palate: quite sweet, lots of cassis and lots of tannins still. This is not a very refined or elegant wine (11/20). Overall: the wine looked much older than it was, but smelled very young. I wonder what the deal is with the colour?? This was not my kind of wine (5/10)

  • 2007 Fairview Pinotage 84 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl

    Tasted double blind. Decanted for about an hour. Appearance: a rather pale red with a strong violet tinge to the edge (4/5). Nose: quite a strong smell of bananas and bubblegum. Rather pungent in the decanter (11/15). Palate: quite light on the tongue, very little tannins, if any, and a nice lively taste of red berries. Also a hint of rubber coming through on the finish (13/20). Overall: I was sure this was a Beaujolais or something similar made of gamay, but no, it was a pinotage from South Africa! I was pleased that I did catch a note of rubber on the finish, but it certainly was not a very strong part of the aroma or palate in this wine. It was quite pleasant wine, one that could go well with a light dinner or at a party (6/10).
