Fall 2008 David Bowler Wine Event

Introduction
This event showcased some of the newest offerings in David Bowler's portfolio. Thanks to David for letting me attend, and to Mikhail for cluing me in. As usual at these events, pours were small, many whites were too chilled, there wasn't enough time and it got very crowded. Also in this case the glassware was thick and heavy. That is to say, it wasn't the optimal situation for writing up a good tasting note. Hence these are pretty sketchy, and I've opted to put my scores into small ranges. Since CellarTracker still doesn't allow score-ranges in the score field, I've put my scores in with the notes.
Some of the top wines were the Tement Grassnitzberg (once again one of my favorites), the Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne from 2000, the Lambert Chinon, Birgit Eichinger's Riesling Heiligenstein, the Serrette Cornas and the wines from Richeaume in Provence.

NV Jean-Louis Denois Crémant de Limoux Brut Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Crémant de Limoux
Light lemon color. Funky, yeasty on the nose with a slight aroma akin to dirty diapers. On the palate, apple and spice with a pretty aggressive fizz. 85-87 points.

Light lemon color. Funky nose with aromas of smoked nuts. Earthy on the palate with flavors of fig; good acidity and structure. 88-90 pts.

Light salmon color. Subtle on the nose with elements of yeast and tart red berries. On the palate, minerality and a touch of good, delicate fruit. 87-89 pts.

NV Soutiran Champagne Grand Cru Perle Noire Brut

Light lemon color. Intense, doughy, spicy nose with aromas of fig and nuts. Somewhat reticent on the palate but with a good acid spine. 88-90 pts.

2006 La Source du Ruault Saumur-Champigny

Light to medium ruby color. Bright red berries on the nose with elements of tobacco and menthol. Light bodied and a touch candied on the palate. It's a bright, good everyday wine. Ripe tannins. 87-89 pts.

2006 Béatrice et Pascal Lambert Chinon Les Perruches

Medium ruby color. Strong herbal, menthol character on the nose with some barnyardy notes. Focused ripe strawberry flavor on the palate, grippy tannins need a couple of years to integrate, but this is very good wine; medium bodied, smoky and earthy. 89-91 pts.

Light lemon color. Brilliant nose of white peach, lemon and gooseberries. Full bodied on the palate, more minerally than the fruitier 06, silky with a very long finish. Delicious Sauvignon Blanc. 91-93 pts.

2007 Birgit Eichinger Grüner Veltliner Ried Hasel

Light lemon color. Nose of lemon zest and vanilla. On the palate, white fruit with a touch of tropical fruit; very nice, clean and elegant. Not unlike a white Burgundy in profile, although this only saw stainless steel. 88-90 pts.

2007 Buchegger Grüner Veltliner Pfarrweingarten

Light lemon color. Nose of white fruits and honey. On the palate, the initial attack is sugared, although there is apparently very little or no residual sugar in the wine. Minerally and elegant on the middle and finish. 88-90 pts.
