Open 4 hrs; no decant. Tarry, red fruited nose. Slightly smudgy. Tannins very chalky. Herbaceous palate with fruit perhaps a little muted. Still a wall of tannin right now and pretty hard work – but it was the first wine of the night so perhaps this was always likely to be the case. Became much more approachable later, either from the extra oxygenation or just having adjusted to the tannins!
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Much sweeter nose than the Pora, and slight darker fruited – certainly a sense of more ripeness. Really lovely nose. Palate pretty rounded; fewer tannins than others in this lineup but still v chalky. Something slightly menthol-y there perhaps. Prettier nose than palate.
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Slightly darker in the glass than others, and a darker fruit profile too – brambles and something slightly funky/sweaty (not necessarily in a bad way!). Not all that pure-fruited. Palate follows suit. Lovely, harmonious wine in a decent place right now.
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Lovely nose full of raspberry, cinnamon etc. – perhaps a clove or two. Purer palate than others and a thwack of tannins at the end. Palate is less generous than the nose; perhaps just a little less complex than expected?
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Super pure, red fruited nose – hint of something lifted too (I’d have said vanilla if I didn’t know how these were made). Less perceptible acidity on the palate than other riservas tried alongside. Chalky tannins. Fruit slightly muted. Approachable at this stage but will obviously improve.
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Darker than others in this lineup in the glass. Nose slightly indistinct vs the other riservas; nothing bad, just harder to pick out any specific notes (for me). Palate similar. Tannins chalky but slackening. Lovely, but perhaps with just a bit less personality than the others?
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Phroah – really visceral nose: aggressively raspberry! And something herbaceous there too. Slightly wild. Tannins are pretty stringy still at this stage. This is full on – not ethereal by any means! Real point of difference in this lineup, with its best still yet to come. 93++
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Very youthful looking in the glass: little to no garnet/bricking. Darker fruit profile than some others, and some indistinct indication of pretty ripe fruit. Reasonably cool palate. Masses of stuffing. Clearly a mega wine, but for me still slightly closed – tonnes of potential and I’d love to have a case of this to drink slowly over the next 20 years. After some more time in the glass some lovely earthiness came through. 94++.
Open 4 hrs; no decant. Very dark in the glass. Cool nose; some high toned vanilla etc. together with pretty mixed, albeit subdued, red/black fruits. Very chalky tannins. I’m sure that this will be a great wine, but still feels pretty closed off to me. 93++.
