Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2018 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Decanted 6 hrs. Warm nose; overripe strawberries? Not an absolute blockbuster; quite subdued. Some pithy orange zest. Anything but underripe. Floral, v. pretty palate Wont make old bones but lovely now. Low acid, low tannin. Drink now! Served a little warm.

Incredibly pale. Raspberries, sour red cherries. Super delicate, but much more of a ‘classic’ Barolo than the Monprivato. Grippy palate, medium acidity, very primary. Really pretty ultra classic, with great concentration. Weird notes of five spice? I really like this – tiny bit ripe but should have another 10 years in it easily. Bit of alcohol warmth on the finish. Again served a little too warm

  • 1978 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barbaresco Bernadotti 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Virtually opaque – tonnes of superfine suspended sediment contributing to that. Super tertiary; dusty mushrooms. Super rustic. Lots of brett. But notwithstanding all that there’s a tonne of life left in this still on both the nose and the palate; anything but dried out. Real core of tobacco sweetness. This is delicious.

  • 2017 Elio Sandri Barolo Perno 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Darkish ruby. Amazing; beautifully heady nose. Earthy; morello cherries; Chinese five-spice; bit of nutmeg. V cool-fruited palate, on the redder end of the fruit spectrum. Surprising amount of development for a 2017 – very open and approachable. Closest thing I can equate to it is a ~10 year old Hermitage! Very pretty

Back to classic monprivato florality on the nose. Super delicate, super truffled. It’s still a “warm” wine – all of the fruit is pretty ripe, strawberry notes the most dominant. Palate follows, albeit with a fair amount of restraint – all very ‘in place’. My preference would be for a little more acidity but this is a very pretty, delicate wine
