Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Pretty sweaty nose – quite funky, lots of leather. Some fruit but obviously pretty tertiary; bit of a lumpy shape and some odd sourness (VA?), but pretty good all told. Slipping relatively gracefully past maturity. Fun albeit a bit too far gone for me

Wow; incredibly youthful ruby colour. Nose is lovely; brambles, cigar box, but real driving fruit. Good level of tannins remaining, and a redder fruit profile on the palate than the nose. Proper Brunello – absolutely delicious and an incredibly well preserved example, driven by a fantastically fresh/youthful fruit core. On the evidence of this bottle alone, this has ages left in the tank

Sweaty, meaty nose. Pretty musty. Not faulty necessarily, just knackered. Few strands of red fruit clinging on perhaps (alongside bags of leather/tertiary stuff), but only just. Definitely post-peak. Not unpleasant but just not much left.

En magnum. Super youthful nose; dark fruited, plumbs. Unusual! A little redder on the palate with a dollop of tannin and acidity thrown in, but still pretty black. Very primary at this stage, but nevertheless open for business – just a hint of something tertiary. Nothing profound but one would have thought that this is only going to improve. 91+
