Introduction

Graciously invited by my friend Chatters for a part vertical tasting of some CDP with some very lovely people.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2009 Yeringberg Marsanne Roussanne

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Light medium honey gold 4/10
White flower, honey suckle, a little cream, almond meal, a little spice.
Palate has a little bitter citrus rind but it is soft, round, rich, oily. Creamy. I would expect Malo. Acidity is bright but under control, finish is medium length. This is beautiful.

  • 2001 Domaine Rabasse-Charavin Côtes du Rhône Villages Les Cailloux

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages

Garnet and brown, well mixed and visually aged.
Little barnyard, thick, a little faded cherry. Mushroom forest floor?
On palate it is light medium bodied, a little bit of spice, savoury, strawberry cherry fading. Finish is long. I prefer the smell to the taste, it's lovely.

  • 1998 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Rich garnet with some red bricking around the rim.
On the nose it is a little bruised apple, stewed raisins and Christmas fruit, mocha coffee, blackcurrant.
Palate it is similar, perhaps more stewed raisins and mocha. Richer and more concentrated than the 2001. A little powdery. Nice.

  • 2005 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Petits Cailloux

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

medium garnet with plenty of red bricking.
On the nose it's a little leathery, some red fruit compote, there is a little funk but it's not intrusive.
On palate there is a little black tea, herbal notes, fine powdery, red and black fruit fading.
Easier to drink than the others, I do like.

  • 2006 Domaine Rois Mages Rully Les Cailloux

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully

medium garnet with plenty of red bricking.
On the nose there is more fruit than the previous wines, a little liquorice, a little jam, blackcurrant.
On the palate it surprised me, despite the nose being familiar the palate is different. A little tea, beef stock, savoury, not that much fruit.

  • 2007 Domaine Rois Mages Rully Les Cailloux

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully

Deep garnet with some red bricking.
On the nose, barnyard funk, described by others as sewer drains. Quite thick and musty.
On the palate you can taste the barnyard, the alcohol feels high and is becoming intrusive. The body is medium light. This is my least fav so far. Too barnyardy

  • 2008 Domaine Rois Mages Rully Les Cailloux

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully

Deep garnet with a little red bricking.
On the nose there is a little barnyard funk but it's not strong, red fruits, a little powdery thick, liquorice.
On the palate the fruit pops in a way the others have not, a little bit of black tea in the background. It's well balanced and rounded. I liked how fresh it was.
    Partners second fav

  • 2009 Domaine Rois Mages Rully Les Cailloux

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully

Medium dark garnet, some red fading but not stark like some of the others.
On the nose it is a very small amount of barnyard familiarity, fennel aniseed, strawberry blackberry blueberry.
On the palate it is quite fresh and jammy compote with black and red fruits. Some liquorice aniseed. Some black tea. Tastes fresher than any of the others, the fruit is more present.
    This was my partners favourite.
