Coravin fun - Chateau Prieure Lichine/Cellartracker in the flesh with Ninetails

Introduction

Andrew popped over to try some more wines - this time we're looking at Chateau Prieure Lichine and Margaux & focussing on this century.

Flight 1 - 00's (5 Notes)

04 & 05 were the stand outs for me here. Pity about the 01…that'll need to be tidied up soon.

2001 Château Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Initially this is quite fresh and fruity (brambles blackcurrant) though with time the fruit starts getting a little dried out. Wet earth, a little raspberry, sweet spice, cedar, smidge of pyrazine, Brett and volatility. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, quite tart on the palate, more savoury, fruit a little dried out and bruised here, tannins are a silky burr and near resolved, leathery, touch of herbaceousness, bit meh. Drink up.

2003 Château Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Ripe, raisined fruit, liquorice, sweet spice, baked earth, a little herbaceous underpin shows as almost garrigue with a little minty note as well. Bordeaux does Chateauneuf du Pape? Medium plus intensity acidity and green and tart on the palate, tomato leaf, bitter and astringent, pretty awful stuff.

2004 Château Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Initially quite meaty and savoury, then, with air, blackcurrant, slight plum, tiny cherry and violet here as well as some baking spice, very slight oxidised notes, integrated toasted oak. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy, brambles and plums, baking spices, grippy tannins pucker the mid palate and encroach on the gums, drying but not coarse, all persists long with some blood, iron, leather and a little toasted note joins on the finish. Yum

2005 Château Prieuré-Lichine

From Coravin. Dense and brooding, alcohol prickle, baked fruits show black over red berries, tomato leaf, slight blackcurrant, cedar, cream, opens begrudgingly over time with a savoury and meaty underpin and a slightly jubey quality to the fruit. Juicy but concentrated on the palate, dense here as well but not overdone, powdery tannic burr is drying, a little yeast extract. It's quite fleshy, touches of cedar, Yum

2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine

From Coravin. Pretty and polished though the alcohol prickle is a little off putting, ripe fruit is more plummy; red and black, dusty spices are pushed by the alcohol. Simple nose. Plush and plummy on the palate, juicy, fleshy, alcohol warmth lends a little white pepper spice, tannins are coarse flour textured coating the front of mouth and mid palate, despite the warmth this feels slightly dilute as well with a little astringency on the finish. Hmm.

2011 Château Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Brambles, violet, cedar, leather, cigar box, jubey fruit lozenge, a smidge of black tea, Asian five spice has a dusty underpin; star anise. On the palate the fruit sweet core has a touch of savoury crust with, with the drying and slightly green tannins, lends some bitterness which stays the right side of off putting. Medium length with some jubey red fruit lozenge and creamy notes. Rather pleasant.

2015 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Ripe blackcurrant, a little candied note, touches of alcohol prickle, sweet spice; brambles over plums, a little earhty underpin, tarry black liquorice, clay. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, slightly dilute, a bitter note to the dark hued fruits; more plum here, talc textu3ed tannins fill the mid palate and shows quite cedary, a little meaty underpin, cream. The fruit is more jubey on the medium length finish. Kind of nice.

2015 Château Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Alcohol prickle, a melange of black fruits has a slightly jammy quality; brambles, blackcurrant and plum, baked earth, sweet spice, a little toasted pastry note (?), cedar, slight cigar box and pencil shavings. In the mouth it's dense, straying from the jammy to the fruit concentrate space; an impression reinforced by the powerful four square tannins. Still primary and, arguably, a little simple on the palate. Time required to come together, for me.

2016 Château Prieuré-Lichine

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Red liquorice, red berry fruit is jammy; a little raspberry, red cherry over a little blackcurrant tending to cassis in the fruit lozenge space. There is also a meaty almost bloody underpin here as well; still quite primary though integrated. Juicy, fruit forward and generous in the mouth, cedary, woody, slightly coarse tannins need time to integrate on the palate, a little non intrusive alcohol warmth helps carry the fruit long which shows that jubey quality again with a touch of astringency. Time but promise.
