Introduction

Celebrating Bastille Day with a selection of red wines from the left bank of the Gironde and the Garonne.
1st meeting of a new wine circle of esteemed tasters from France, England, Holland and South Africa. All wines tasted blind with some bread, saucisson, pâté de campagne and French mountain cheeses.

Flight 1 - In the Bread-Oven: (6 Notes)

  • 1999 Château Bouscaut

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Deep, ox-blood red. Powerful, rich nose of liquorice/anise, cedar, pepper with lovely primary fruit and 2ndary alcohol aromas. Clean, smooth palate – elegant rather than robust. Round tannins and liquorice, fruit, pepper and cedar all coming through to the palate. Suave, dry finish. Everyone's favourite – 1st place in the tasting.

  • 2000 Château Taffard de Blaignan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

    Deep, cherry red. Fruity, complex nose. Some vanilla and eucalyptus. Elegant structure, mellow tannins, clean, round and smooth. Medium bodied with a lasting finish.

  • 1999 Château Durfort-Vivens

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Another one from the Lurton family. Deep dark red with purple tints. Lovely rich fruit with bags of tertiary aromas of oak, spice and cherry tobacco. Chewy tannins supporting a rich, full flavour. Fruits – cherry? and cedar wood spice box. Still feels young with good aging potential.

  • 1999 Roc de Saransot

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc

    Cherry red with ox-blood tints. Nice oak, spice and red fruits. Light, lacking concentration but elegant and smooth. Soft and ready now.

  • 2002 L'Allée du Roy

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

    Pretty ruby robe with fresh floral notes and some berries on the nose. Light bodied not deeply flavoured; still a little firm in its youth.

  • 1999 Château Goulefaison

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Tawny-red showing some signs of age. Powerful nose with herbal, fruit and possibly balsamic notes – more alcohol than structure. Lean palate.
