Very nice stuff. Nowhere as 2018 as I would expect, especially from the Mâcon. Crisp acidity balances out a full, rounded palate, with just a modest hint of reduction on the nose. Steely and clean. A new producer for me, but one that definitely suits my palate.
Clean and crisp, as Chablis ought to be. Feels a little rounder than I would expect for Michel -- might be a bit of both the vintage and the vineyard. Relatively plush mix of white and yellow fruit, and a touch of sweetness that indicates the relatively riper vintage.
Wonderful Kabinett. So chewy and dense with its minerality, a light touch to the fruit, and a slight bit of green herbs. Very light and easy to drink, with a very modest amount of sweetness that feels very old school to me.
Maybe not as convincing as my previous experience with this wine. This one shows a little flabbier, and missing some of the cut that I would want in a large-scaled riesling such as this. Almost slightly peachy, but with a stony minerality that I do like. It's just that the acidity seems to be afk here.
#03-02, 8.5% abv. The cork was stuck to the sides of the bottle, and this showed far browner than I would expect for a 2001 Saar; have to think this bottle was heat-damaged.
#31-06, 9% abv. Holds its alcohol very well. Incredibly grippy and chewy, this has the hallmarks of a well-executed hot vintage riesling, with some ripe yellow/slightly browning fruit and so much mineral chew. Very full on the palate, this might be leaning towards Auslese-lite as far as the ripeness goes, but at the same time, there's a levity that does bring this back to Spätlese.
Good, but not at the level of a stellar 2014 a few months ago. Quite oily and thick, and showing the fruit of the vintage very clearly. More yellow fruit than white, with some modest spice notes as well. On the palate, this needed some air to really put itself together, but even then, this feels like a slightly disheveled version of a Wittmann GG. Impressive for its size, but I fell that the more recent iterations are more precise.
Served double blind. But given some context, it wasn't too hard to get mencía. Much better than the 2015 Faraona that I tasted two nights ago. This feels far more typical, with cheerful, bright red fruit, and a relatively light palate presence. The easygoing disposition makes this very accessible, and its not being tainted by a bunch of sharp oak tannins is a huge upgrade.
