Seghesio, Healdsburg
Tasted Tuesday, February 11, 2025 by AllRed with 64 views
We found ourselves with an open day but had been told to head up to Healdsburg to check out Quail & Condor so after stopping there we popped in at Seghesio. We haven't been to the tasting room since 2011 and it's much like I remembered, though they are remodeling and will be hosting tastings upstairs once the renovations are done.
The zins are much like I remember and always reliable and consistent.

Pale pink color. A blend of barbera and aglianico, 77% and 23%, respectively. CArnation and strawberry aromas comprise the bright and pretty bouquet. Flavors of strawberry and melon. Bright underlying acidity. Exactly what it should be.

The primary source of fruit is Chen's Vineyard, planted in 1972 by Ed & Ted Seghesio. Aromas of blueberry and raspberry with a very floral, perfumed note, like potpourri. Bright and pretty. Full-bodied, with flavors of plum, pepper, raspberry and blueberry. Excellent.

An old vineyard, this wine includes fruit from vines as old as 90 years (grafted onto the original 1895 rootstock, as I understand it). Blue and black fruit aromas with warm spice overtones. There's something a little floral as well, what I would describe as blueberry blossoms. Full-bodied with flavors of dark zin fruit and peppery spice, with a lingering brambly finish.
