Exploring Château Prieuré-Lichine

• 2001 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Rich garnet center, fading and browning increasing towards the rim. The nose is delicate but a small swirl brings out the concentration. Plums, raisin, tobacco, oak, cedar, Cassis, spices but sweeter. Complex and alot going on, do need to work the glass to get everything. A little sour upfront, less expressive than the nose, plums, tobacco, under ripe red currants. Medium leaning to lighter in body, acidity medium plus, noticeable alcohol warmth. Tannins present but softened, a little drying.
  
  Not a big wine, soft and a little thin.

• 2003 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Rich garnet center, fading and browning increasing towards the rim. Less giving on the nose than 2001. Forest floor, liquorice, blackberry, small cream, wet leaves, menthol, baking spices, stewed. Body is medium, quite round, soft. Medium acidity that fills the mouth perfectly. Finish medium, tannins a little drying but not intrusive at all. Blackberry, cream, baking spices, tobacco. Really good, this was my favourite of the line up.

• 2004 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Rich garnet center, fading and browning increasing towards the rim. Visually it's slightly darker than the 2001.
  On the nose it's instantly more savoury than the older vintages, blood, liquorice, small menthol, coffee, chocolate, a touch of red fruit. I got a lot less fruit from this one. Body is medium light, tannins drying noticeably more than 01/03, finish is medium. Somewhat bitter and sour on the front palate, almost a metallic taste, red fruit, blood and meat. Not for me.

• 2005 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  A mix of ruby, garnet, and bricking. Deep in the centre and less fade towards the rim compared to the 2001-2004. Ripe blackberry, plum, mint, tobacco leaf, Cassis, earth and soil, violet flowers. The nose was quite big compared to the others, less tertiary and maybe a bit jammy. Slightly powdery, slight black tea.
  
  Medium bodied, tannins quite drying, finish is medium plus - a really gentle fade almost like the way you fall asleep. Despite the wine being rich in flavour the body itself is on the thinner side. Blackberry, plum, tobacco, Cassis, slightly bitter. It's beautiful and my second fav of the tasting.

• 2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine

  Rich garnet center, fading and browning increasing towards the rim. Visually it's almost identical to the 2004.
  
  On the nose it's brighter than the previous wines, more red fruit than black, graphite, in a way it's more delicate but not due to age just stylistically I think. Red berries, currants, cream, asphalt, graphite, mint, Cassis.
  
  Body is medium, tannins a little drying but not intrusive, finish is medium long, acidity fairly balanced with a little mouth watering. Red and black fruits, black tea, Cassis, tobacco, pencil shavings, slightly savoury towards the back. For me it tastes well made, it's not a powerhouse, it's not thin, it's not that delicate it's all in balance. Not my pick of the line up but I quite enjoyed it.

• 2011 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Rich garnet centre expanding to Ruby with some bricking on the edges. Blackberry lozenge, bitumen, plum, mint, soy sauce, cream. Plenty of power in the nose.
  Body is medium slightly light, acidity medium plus, finish medium. Soy sauce, beef stock, red and black fruits, vanilla, baked spices. Polished and rounded, tannins drying but not intrusive, some alcohol warmth. This one is growing on me and I enjoyed each sip more than the last.

• 2015 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Medium garnet with slight fading towards the edges. The nose is more red fruits than black, mint, Cassis, currants, alcohol warmth. Medium intensity on the nose, not huge but not shying away.
  Body is medium light, acidity medium plus with a little sharpness / sourness, tannins puckering more than 2011, finish medium long. The palate is on the thinner side, tart, red fruits, Cassis, powdery tannins, a little leather. Hmm not sure about this one.

• 2015 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Medium dark garnet with a slight fade towards the edges. Interestingly it's noticeably darker than the second wine of the same vintage. Very different nose to the second wine, more black fruits, plum and blackberry, popcorn maybe, biscuit , cream, some alcohol heat. Slightly less intense nose than the second wine of same vintage.
  Body is medium but flavour rich and concentrated, polished and silky, tannins noticeably drying, finish is medium plus. Blackberry, cream, soy sauce, twigs, biscuit. It's bold compared to some of the others but I liked.

• 2016 Château Prieuré-Lichine

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Deep garnet purple with lighter purple on the edges, looks fresh. The nose is quite different to the 2015s. Black and blue fruits, violet, savoury underpin, cocoa powder. Similar in strength to the 2015 first, medium but slightly leaning to light.
  Body is medium light, tannins puckering, acidity medium, finish medium with some alcohol heat. Nose translates over, slightly sour, mouth watering. It's not bad but not my pick of the litter.
