This was a walk around tasting with two tents, one with wines from Argentina and one with California wines. The list here ("the flight") refers to the wines at the Argentinean tent, which included mostly ordinary lower-end malbec and torrontes but some which are rare to find in DC and a few really interesting ones.
2006 El Fogon Torrontés 79 Points
Argentina, Mendoza, Maipú
lots of tropical fruits and flowers, but a bit flat and not all that well balanced.

2005 Bodegas Eclipse Malbec Aconcagua Reserva
Argentina, Mendoza
Something was not entirely correct here, had a taste from two different bottles and the impression was still there, although there was quite a bit of spice and vanilla

2008 La Riojana Torrontés Santa Florentina 82 Points
Argentina, La Rioja
lots of flowers and herbs, more acidity than a few others and the most typical torrontes bouquet of the flight.

2006 Bodegas Escorihuela Gascón Malbec Don Miguel Gascón 83 Points
Argentina, Mendoza
Heavy, dark violet hue, spice and vanilla and in the californian cab league, if not old style cahors.

2007 Baqueano 82 Points
Argentina, Patagonia
grapefruit like acidity levels, fresh, new cut grass flavors. Not bad at all.

2007 Bodega Eral Bravo Urano Malbec Rosé Mendoza 85 Points
Argentina, Mendoza
the strawberry nose makes you think there's going to be a whole lot of sweetness and kool aid when you draw a sip - but then there's this most pleasant surprise and a peppery dry feel in the mouth with a very decent finish and lots of character.

2007 Bodega Septima Malbec 78 Points
Argentina, Mendoza
a bit boring I must admit - the typical low end malbec with too much oak - a formula which is only good in comparison with the worst of french cheap table wine

2006 Dante Robino Bonarda 78 Points
Argentina, Mendoza
some spice but not very balanced and too much oak, which drowns the rest of the wine.

2007 Trumpeter Torrontés 83 Points
Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Tupungato
some red currant and gooseberry, not unlike the feel of a sauvignon blanc - too much oak

2007 Bodega Colomé Torrontés 85 Points
Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Calchaquies
one of my favourite torrontes - a grape that just does not seem to reach the ultimate heights and very often ends up pretty one-dimensional - this wine has loads of herbs and nettles and parsley on the nose, so much that it's enough to carry the wine itself. good balance.

2006 Bodega Malma Malbec Malma Reserva 86 Points
Argentina, Patagonia
herbs, tannic, good acidity, very very far from the chocolate/vanilla recipe for mendoza malbec in tourist class. restrained and elegant, one of the wines in this tasting which I felt would benefit from a few years in the bottle.

2007 Doña Paula Chardonnay Estate 85 Points
Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
some nerv and mineral and good fruit - not tropical, but its certainly not chablis either. Very fine specimen of new world chardonnay

2006 Finca El Portillo (Bodegas Salentein) Chardonnay Reserve 77 Points
Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco
oaky; vanilla and butter cream simple but quite allright acidity to balance the whole thing

2002 Bodega Weinert Cavas de Weinert Gran Vino 90 Points
Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
best wine of the tasting - some green pepper and mint, good fruit and just a herbal fruit forward wunderkind which would easily have passed for either a saint estephe or a saint emilion - which makes me wonder if there's really only merlot in this wine. it is clearly dominant, but I feel some cabernet sauvignon as well. at any rate, very good indeed
