Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2013 Domaine Patrick Javillier Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

The nose is open, layered, and balanced with flowing tones of baked apples, Meyer lemons, navel oranges, quince, vanilla beans, oils, nougat, and yellow flowers. This shows off the grand cru stature in its presence and style while possessing an open-knit quality. The Full bodied feel is balanced, deep, and textured with mouthwatering and crisp, medium+ acidity. The structure still has some bite and shows the youth where the nose didn’t as much. A few years could do this some real good and I can see this kicking up a gear when the structure comes into full balance.

  • 2002 Ayala Champagne Perle d'Ayala Nature 91 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose shows an elegant and nuanced nature to the tones of red apples, baked pears, quince, ginger, custard notes, brioche, and yellow flowers. The Medium bodied feel is textured and elegant with crisp, high acidity that is pretty well integrated right now. I’m generally a fan of this creamier style of Champagne and I’m a fan here as well. The lower bars of pressure create a different experience that harkens to a style from the past and it’s really enjoyable.

  • 2010 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

The nose is perfumed and poised with a dark and intriguing take to the tones of raspberries, sour cherries, dark red fruits, herbs, leather, tobacco leaf, earth notes, and violets. There is excellent complexity and balance as the nose is showing quite well already. The Medium bodied feel is refined, but with a bit of weight along with crisp, medium+ acidity and gripping, medium+ tannins. The structure is showing a fair bit of youth that will need some age to sort out. This nose though, there is a lot of promise here and I can see this adding some layers in time.

  • 2001 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

The nose is deep, robust, and savory with balanced tones of sour red cherries, raspberries, dark red berries, some peppery notes, licorice, earth tones, and violets. This is so melded and balanced. There was that gorgeous layering that really good burgundy brings. The Medium/full bodied feel is well balanced and deep with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins that are fairly resolved. This is really damned good and showing off its class.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

So…….this is one of those Alice in Wonderland noses. The wine just perfumes and permeates in the glass with deep layering to the tones of red fruits, rose petals, raspberries, red cherries, leather notes, black truffles, earth tones, and a touch of tobacco. This is easily what would be referred to as: kaleidoscopic. The Medium bodied feel is just so refined and poised with a satin-like texture that leans into crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This is why I love Burgundy. There is so much going on across the nose and palate, yet with an elegant nature to it the whole time. This is the dragon that gets chased, but so be it.

  • 2002 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

The nose is slightly coiled up compared to the 96. That said, there is some lovely perfume and poise to the balanced tones of red cherries, raspberries, strawberries, herbs, peppery notes, licorice, violets, and rose petals. The Medium bodied feel is deft and refined with a poised take along with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, yet slightly taught medium+ tannins. This is really good now, but it feels like it has some room to get better with more patience if the 96 is any guide.

  • 2011 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

There is a hint of flinty reduction that is noticeable right away and doesn’t fully pull back. Behind the reduction the nose is deft and balanced with tones of pears, apples, white fruits, crushed rocks, smoke, and some yellow flowers. The Medium bodied feel has a deft touch with tart, medium+ acidity that still has some sting behind it. There is excellent texture and poise across the nose and palate with a sense of style that is enticing. If the reduction can integrate and peel back, this will hit some bigger highs.

  • 2008 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

The nose is robust and balanced with a touch of oak poking through along with raspberries, cranberries, sour red berries, licorice, leather, earth notes, and violets. There is excellent complexity right now, but the tones aren’t playing in full harmony just yet. The Medium bodied feel has some heft and balance with crisp, medium+ acidity and gripping, medium+ tannins that have a bit of woodiness as well. This really just needs time. It’s a slight bit awkward right now and feels like a good 5-8+ years will be a great benefit.

  • 1999 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

This is like a velvet hammer in many ways. There is some stature serving the base, but with pure refinement and perfume to the tones of red cherries, raspberries, fresh herbs, earth notes, truffles, leather, wild flowers, and roses. There is seamless depth and poise that is intoxicating. The Medium bodied feel is so deft and elegant with crisp, medium+ acidity that has a bit of bite along with silky, medium+ tannins. This is just lovely. There is such a heightened sense of elegance and refinement from this that I can’t get enough of.
