Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2016 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Villero 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose shows a darker take to the fruit with tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, savory herbs, mint leaves, tar, potpourri, tobacco leaf, mineral notes, and violets. While there is good complexity, the tones feel like they’re somewhat competing against each other rather than working together. The Full bodied feel is refined and deft with tart, high acidity and youthful, high tannins. The texture has some punch and is holding this back a bit. Time will absolutely serve this well. There is a real good wine here, it just hasn’t fully emerged yet.

  • 2016 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is heady and perfumed with loads of balance to the tones of red cherries, raspberries, strawberries, juniper berries, herbal spices, roasted herbs, some ashy notes, roses, and violets. There is some lovely depth as this is really turned on. The Medium/full bodied feel is deft and refined with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins that do have some bite. This is just gorgeous and feels like it could be at the beginning of its window. There is a lot of freshness and vibrancy to the fruit that can certainly use time to calm down, but it’s really bringing some joy right now.

  • 2013 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Monprivato 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is a bit wound up and tight. It takes some swirling to open it up slightly with balanced tones of red cherries, raspberries, currants, morning dew, roasted herbs, licorice, and a fair bit of various red florals. There is a lot of promise to the nose as it does start to slightly reveal itself just a bit. The Medium/full bodied feel is refined and youthful with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins that have some youthful grip to them. This will need more time to really show itself off as all of the components are there for something really beautiful.

  • 2015 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Monprivato 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is sunny and vibrant with excellent balance and purity to the tones of red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, red fruits, crushed rocks, sweet tobacco, and a heavy dose of roses. There is such lovely depth and pristine qualities already that make this a really attractive nose. The Full bodied feel is refined and balanced with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The structure shows off the clear youth of the wines. The nose is pretty already, but it will certainly need a few more years for the palate to catch up.

  • 2016 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Monprivato 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Oh, this is nice. There is so much depth already that draws you in with a gorgeous, savory backdrop to the tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, dark red fruits, roasted herbs, tobacco leaf, earth notes, perfumes, and a heavy dose of roses. The Full bodied feel has some heft, but with a light touch while possessing racy, high acidity and chewy, high tannins are certainly youthful. This is so good already, but it has a lot more to give. The nose is so perfumed and gorgeous, but with a primary quality to the tones while the structure has some grip.

  • 2019 Giovanni Sordo Barolo Monprivato 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

There is a real soulful quality to this nose that makes me smile. It is backed up by a good amount of depth and balance to the tones of dark red berries, dark red cherries, purple hued fruits, raspberries, flinty notes, savory herbs, violets, and wild flowers. The Full bodied feel is poised and elegant with mouthwatering, high acidity and silky, high tannins that have a lot of youth. This could be a serious winner down the road. It starts off at such a high level already and yet, it is only at the front end of its life.
