Sommelier at the restaurant turned out to be the wine maker of this and we decided we needed to pop a bottle to give this a try. Charming bouquet with lychee, nashi pears, apricots and chamomile leaves while right off the bat palate intensity and concentration combined with super pure and transparent white fruit was truly intriguing and mind-boggling - damm this is really good!

Bouquet dominated mostly by apricots, nashi pear and lychee but a bit linear and one-dimensional on the palate. Not the style that I like.

2014 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 94 Points

Summing this up into 2 words - "Sex appeal". The purity, lift and elegance in this was simply magical. Beguiling and captivating bouquet of incense smoke, cloves, cardamom, crushed strawberries, mulberries, violets and olives. Palate is beautiful and elegant, with pure red fruit and spices (sage, cloves) culminating in a wonderful texture and focus here with incredible lift and purity. With more time in class, incense and sandalwood intensifies, creating a really charming and enchanting finish full of finesse and depth.

2016 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 93 Points

Side by side with the 2014, producer signature and imprint was clear here with an equally attractive and captivating bouquet of incense smoke, cloves, sage, anise seed, prunes and dark plums. Though, and rightly so because of the vintage, this was a lot darker in fruit profile with more minerality and earth supporting the fruit core. Palate still a little primary but loads of dark plums and dark cherries in high concentration, incense smoke and sandalwood dominates here on the back palate. On day 2, this softened nicely, with palate showing firmly and flamboyantly though now spices, sandalwood and cedar appear a bit clunky.

2013 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 93 Points

Initially super excited to try this one but unfortunately this was in a bit of a sleepy mood. Fruity but broody bouquet displaying ripe plums, maraschino cherries, leather, sadle, earth, gravel and some stems (muted). Palate a little tightly wound with plum jam, chalk and compote. Finish was good with plenty of tension but overall just a little underwhelming and we decided to take half a bottle away. On day 2, this started to show much better with concentrated cherry liquor, cigar ash, almonds, mulberries and cooked plums, this softened up really nicely. Probably should give these bottles a bit more time in cellar!

2015 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 95 Points

Debating between the 2015 and 2017, where I felt that the 2015 should be showing better since it has a bit more age and since it was a ripe vintage. However, despite the engineering and discussions, this was way too tight and young that I felt so bad. Bouquet a little too linear, with some white pears and white peaches coming through. With more coaxing, roasted white sesame and curry leaf emerge but unfortunately not much more going on. Palate shows more stuffing and quality but too coiled up - though worth noting that there was tension and verve.

Similarly, we took half a bottle away and boy were we rewarded on day 2. Bouquet now intensifies with honeysuckle, yellow plums, sage and lemon rind and palate has now gained way more depth and complexity, with white peaches, jasmine, sesame and toasted pecans coming through in spades! This was so complete at this stage and this is rightly Leflaive Chevalier!

2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 94 Points

Firing like a machine gun from the get go. Reductive bouquet showing limestone, nashi pear, meyer lemon, sesame, toasted almonds, curry leaf and peppercorns in flamboyant fashion. Palate has superb intensity and concentration with ripe yellow fruit - pineapple juice and sudachi curd the most obvious, with straw and chalk supporting the underlying fruit. Incredible drink with such transparency and purity. Finish was lengthy and meaningful with super acidity.

2015 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

Tasted blind but thought this was so darn familiar. Stemmy and aromatic bouquet with lush bayberries, mulberries, violets, sage, morels and champignons. Palate has superb density and balance - ripeness from the vintage never really threatening to overpower at any point in time. This is all finesse and elegance! If I had this bottle, I’d put this away for a bit more time but I get a sense one wouldn’t really be disappointed even jf popped today.

2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton Domaine Prince Florent de Merode 93 Points

A friend at the next table generously shared a pour so very brief notes. Mesmerising bouquet showing ripe plums, crushed blueberries, sandalwood, spearmint and plush spice. Palate seems to be typical of the vintage here, with ripe plush red fruits and eucalyptus dominating at the fore. Good persistence and depth here and would definitely benefit with longer slumber period in the cellar or longer decanting.
