Introduction

These were the wines that we drank during our visit with Florida relatives & friends. Each of them chose the wines during our visit or meal.

Flight 1 - With Pizza (1 Note)

  • 2021 Francis Ford Coppola Merlot Diamond Collection Blue Label 87 Points

    USA, California

    (2/23/2025)

PnP, but definitely better after 15 minutes of slo-ox. The color was a medium+ ruby. Dark fruits and some earth on the nose. The medium bodied palate showed these dark fruits -- mostly black cherry with some blackberry and cranberry -- along with some earth, and touches of spice and chocolate. The acidity was juicy, and any tannins were integrated. This wine could hold for several years.

Flight 2 - With BBQ (1 Note)

  • 2021 Michael-David Vineyards Zinfandel 7 Deadly Zins 88 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

    (2/24/2025)

PnP. Some dark red, blue and black fruits on both the nose and the palate. Also shows lots of spice plus touches of smoke, oak, and tannins. A solid, dependable performer in this varietal with a really good QPR, and a great affinity for smoked ribs. Should hold for a couple of years.

Flight 3 - With various light bites (1 Note)

  • 2023 Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling 88 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (2/25/2025)

PnP, chilled. Straw-yellow in color. Mineral and citrus notes on the nose. The medium bodied palate presented lime, lemon, some peach and a bit of orange. All in a slightly off-dry wine with sufficient acidity to balance. Should hold.

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Villages

    (2/26/2025)

PnP, chilled, but opened with some air. Light floral and mineral notes on the nose. The medium bodied palate is fruity - stone fruit, apple, lemon - with minerality and balancing acidity. Should continue to hold for several years.

Flight 5 - With light bites & conversation (1 Note)

  • 2023 Caves d'Esclans Whispering Angel 87 Points

    France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

    (2/27/2025)

A solid, consistent Provence Rosé with strawberry and mineral notes on the nose. These carry over to the medium bodied palate with the addition of some lemon and melon. The acidity is balancing, and the wine is dry. Should continue to hold.

Flight 6 - With assorted light bites (1 Note)

  • 2023 Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling 88 Points

    (2/28/2025)

Another day with our favorite cousin -- another bottle of her favorite wine. Just as enjoyable as the previous bottle a few days ago.

Flight 7 - With assorted meat dishes (1 Note)

  • 2022 14 Hands Merlot 86 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (3/1/2025)

PnP, but better after 10 minutes of air. A straight-forward merlot showing dark red fruits--mostly black cherry, with some blackberry--a touch of oak, mostly integrated tannins, and a hint of smoke. The acidity is balancing, and the finish is relatively short. This is not a wine that will make you sit up and take notice. May hold for a couple of years.

Flight 8 - With a ShackBurger (1 Note)

  • 2022 Altitude Project Cabernet Sauvignon 82 Points

    USA, California

    (3/2/2025)

Served at the bar in the Delta terminal at FLL. A Cabernet that was not made in the vineyard or in the cellar, but in the lab. Saved only by the ShackBurger and fries that we ate with the wine.
Poured from an open bottle. Some dark fruits and oak on the nose. The medium to minus bodied palate showed some dark fruits (a cross between a Luden's cherry cough drop and a grape Jolly Rancher), a touch of cinnamon and oak. The acidity was less than balancing making the wine flabby and a bit "fruit sweet".
It was wet - and it had alcohol...

Good to spend some time with all of these people but not a week of fine wine...
