Introduction
A great seminar and great wines! The Grand Echezeaux was really fantastic. A new female Asian winemaker for such a regarded Domaine is noteworthy and worth following. In the future, she seeks to bring more aromatics and purity to the wines.
I stayed behind and drank the glasses of Grand Echezeaux that went untouched… a great view and a great wine. Strong runner ups were the Clos Vougeot and Brulee - also great wines - and needing a years to get out of their shell.
The new winemaker shared a bit on whole bunches fermentations. She likes whole bunch to give sensation of freshness, it like “salt and pepper” to season a wine. Wine may lose acid as a result, but a lift comes from a textural improvement. Despite lower acidity, the wine can overall feel fresher and brighter. You need to adapt to the year and the cuvee. She noted its tricky to do 100% whole bunch (can create acetate notes), so 80% is safe. And regarding oak: oak can impart freshness through more oxygenation or a toast imparting greenness.
2019 range is 13.5%, and some cuvees only have 100 cases produced
2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Vosne-Romanée 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Very soft, supple, and not quite creamy. Black and red cherry. Slight essence of vanilla cotton candy sweetness. Approachable and gulpable now. The Vosne has declassified, young vines from all vineyards in Vosne Romanee, including the Grand Cru. 25% whole bunch. Unfortunately none for sale on WS. I passed buying on these EP at a good price and that was a mistake 92-93

2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Vosne-Romanée Le Clos d'Eugenie 93 Points

A step up in structure and finesse from the Vosne. Eugenie is mother of the owner (who is one of the richest men in France), and the domaine is so named. Supple textures again, but a lighter touch than the Vosne. Same red fruits and cotton candy on nose, but somehow more serious and less fat. 50-60 year old vineyards. 40% whole bunch. $150 retail. 93+

2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Wow nose. Deeper nose here with loads of brambly dark red fruits and Vosne spice. Sweet fruit doesn’t present as overt candy in this one. Palate follows with perfectly ripe red and dark red fruits. Nice intensity of fruit without textural heaviness. Power without weight. 50% whole bunch. 50% new oak. $350 retail.

2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Echezeaux 94 Points

This plot is situated in colder section, and can sometimes be underripe… but in 2019 saw 80% whole bunch and oak. Nose felt a little spicey and hot to me. Rounded blackberry and red cherry, with some spice. Texturally very light. Again, strong flavors and supple oak-infused texture, with overall less heaviness in the house. A little too rounded here for me and surprised at price point here of $500+ on Wine Searcher. Certainly a crowd pleaser though.

2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Grands-Echezeaux 97 Points

Wow! This GE is more perfumed and a finer nose than the Eche. Spiced red and black berries. Very fine nose with a hint of bergamot poking out. On palate, this is delicious. Mineral blackberry, black cherry and cherry. A hint of bitter pits on the finish. Gently tannic. 500+ wine and that can be justified. I filled my belly up on this one! ZW96.. but if this is a 96.. I'll never score anything 100.

2019 Domaine d'Eugénie Clos Vougeot 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
60% whole cluster, 80% oak. Florals, ripe fruits. Fine nose despite it being fat and rounded at the same time. Dense, red/dark red/purple flowers. Feels pure and lithe, despite the big oak regime. Big tannic finish that sneakily dries out the mouth - I didn’t realize this at yesterday's tasting (which speaks to the problem of tasting so many wines). Maybe I wish more freshness here, although the density and tannins leave plenty of room to age. $350 feels like reasonable value in the whole portfolio pricing. ZW95
