Heidi's Gang: 2005 Village Red Burgs - Top Guns & More

This was the regular Heidi's group tasting with six of us on hand (CV,DD,BE,KB,SS,LI). Our theme was suggested by Steve that we do a horizontal of 2005 Red Burg Village wines from some of the top producers. Steve generously provided the 5 red burgs for the evening with the rest of us bringing the Champagne and White Burgs. It was a great evening, with really fun wines to explore. St. Gen as always made for good food and a welcome atmosphere. Thanks especially to Steve for sharing and everyone else as well!

• NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Édition 168ème 94 Points

  France, Champagne

  Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Nougat, spice cake, ginger snaps, bright green apples on the nose. The palate has a soft creamy texture, apple, apple peel, sourdough, ginger, blood orange, honey, briny citrus, with the lightly oxidative signature. 93+ to 94pts.

• 2012 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 95 Points

  France, Champagne

  Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. This is showing tons of sea spray and fresh air, pear, toast, creamy, vivid, spiced apple, almond, crystalline minerality, and a little creme de caramel. Loved it, so refined and elegant. 95+(+)pts.

• 2014 Jean-Marc Roulot Corton-Charlemagne 95 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

  Light green-gold color. Drank a glass over 2 hours. Slate, gunflint, really steely and focuses, filled with ocean air and freshness, lemon and subtle stone fruits. This is truly focused, pure and mineral driven. Only modest reduction now, and more like a Puligny than Corton. Great bottle.

• 2014 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

  Light gold plus color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Golden apple, oak spice to start, rich and layered, nice spices, creamy, full bodied, savory, tons of minerality builds across the palate as this really emerges after 30 mintes; apple, Meyer lemon, caressing texture and depth. This took its time to open and then the oak integrated and this really unfolded into a complex and pretty wine that truly defines Corton. This bottle really seemed to have shed its fairly notable matchstick and gunflint from previous bottles. 94+ to 95pts.

• 2020 Domaine Rougeot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

  Light gold color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Same bottle as Chablis28. Rich, deep, layered, distinctive lemon, shellac, very nice.

• 2005 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

  Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drank this in a grouping of 2005 top village red burgs: Roumier C-M, Mugnier C-M, Meo V-R, Fourrier G-C, and Rousseau G-C. This was deeply earthy, with mushroom, tar, dark fruit, dark red berries, and spice on the nose. The palate is deep, ripe, dark red fruits, spice, pepper, deep savory berries, and such beautiful forest floor. Pretty, pure and fine. This was the wine of the grouping, though it did taper off a bit over the evening while the others were coming on. 93+ to 94pts.

• 2005 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

  Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drank this in a grouping of 2005 top village red burgs: Roumier C-M, Mugnier C-M, Meo V-R, Fourrier G-C, and Rousseau G-C. Solid, but slow to open. Good; cherry, iron, char and mineral notes on the nose. The nose is better than the palate currently, becoming more earthy with subtle violets. The palate has red and blue fruits, iron and cherry, though a little alcohol shows too. While this took a little time to come show better, it was my least favorite of the bunch. Perhaps this was showing its age more than the others.

• 2005 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 92 Points

  Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drank this in a grouping of 2005 top village red burgs: Roumier C-M, Mugnier C-M, Meo V-R, Fourrier G-C, and Rousseau G-C. Lacquer, black cherry, cherry, leafy, reductive, a touch of alcohol to start off. This really evolved nicely over the hour to become round and even, balanced with very nice dark berry fruit.

• 2005 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

  Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drank this in a grouping of 2005 top village red burgs: Roumier C-M, Mugnier C-M, Meo V-R, Fourrier G-C, and Rousseau G-C. Attractive perfume and more red berries here, vanilla; the palate is juicy, fuller bodied, really deep berry notes, brambly, a little grip on the tannins, and as this opens there is more of a shift to strawberry and ripe cherry on both the nose and palate. This came on nicely. 92 to 92+pts or maybe a bit better.

• 2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 93 Points

  Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Drank this in a grouping of 2005 top village red burgs: Roumier C-M, Mugnier C-M, Meo V-R, Fourrier G-C, and Rousseau G-C. This was by far the most disappointing of the wines at the outset given the pedigree. Quite reductive to start, but boy did this come around after an hour in what was the most dramatic evolution of the group. Subtle menthol, iodine, sullen earth, spice and darker brooding fruits on the nose. The palate emulates the nose, with blackberry, black raspberry, lots o iron, minerals, a touch of heat. As the transformation begins, and this emerges, as one would hope, to show a lifted earthy, damp forest floor nose, as the fruit becomes more pure and bright. Then after 90 minutes it seemed to fall off. At peak, 92+ to 93pts.
