Introduction

Pekka brought the wines, I tasted double blind

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Antoine Ogier Saint-Joseph Les Chaillés 81 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    Tasted double blind. Decanted for an hour. Appearance: quite a pale red, almost like a burgundy with perhaps a hint of bricking on the edge (4/5). Nose: initially quite pungent with little fruit and some earth. Opens up over time to give more red fruits (9/15). Palate: first taste was quite sweet, but then the acids hit. This is quite an acidic wine with some red fruits and earth coming in, but no tannins to speak of. A bit of a hot finish to it as well (12/20). Overall: I was sure this was a Burgundy, but it was a bit further south instead! This is 100% syrah, but I was quite surprised by how un-syrah-like it was. Not something to go back to (6/10).

  • 2005 Villa Pillo Borgoforte Toscana IGT 86 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Tasted double blind. Decanted for an hour. Appearance: very dark red with a violet edge (4/5). Nose: initially reticent, but then opening up to give scents of violet and cassis. Quite a jammy aroma, nice and rounded (11/15). Palate: full bodied with quite a lot of tannins, quite fruity with casis in the fore. Very reminiscent of a Bordeaux (14/20). Overall: an enjoyable wine with a great QPR (costs about 10 euros in Finland). I was pleasantly surprised by this (7/10).
