Flight 1 - Duo of Raveneau to start (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - DRC Echezeaux vs Grand Echezeaux (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Unfortunately this was not a representative bottle. Not totally undrinkable but far too funky than bottles I’ve had recently.

  • 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

On initial pour this was quite pungent so we left in glass. That was the right call as in time this surprised to the upside with very strong DRC stem and ferrous notes. Bitter cherry palate. 94/100

Flight 3 - A single flight of DRC Romanee St Vivant (1 Note)

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

My last and best bottle. Beautiful just beautiful. Open-knit nose of rose petal and peony. So RSV. Loads of ethereal strawberry fruit. Long finish. Can go for years and develop more tertiary notes. But a pleasure to drink now. Classic DRC stem. 97/100

Flight 4 - The Monopole Big Guns (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Fabulous, but still young. Took well over an hour in wide bodied glasses to become approachable. Super silky blackberry compote, burnt hay, and unmistakable DRC stem. Reminds me of Riche from the same vintage if more refined and with more concentration. 98/100 needs time.

  • 2006 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanée 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

My WOTN against some serious heavyweights (05 Tache, 02 RSV, 03 Soldera, etc). Haunting firecracker smoke and seaweed umami nose. Elegantly composed palate of burnt caramel, stewed fruit, red fruit, autumnal leaves. The 05 Tache that night will eventually eclipse this but for drinking today you can’t go wrong with 06 La Romanee. 98/100

Flight 5 - Raveneau (again!) vs top pinot-based Champagne, with cheese (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Henri Giraud Champagne Grand Cru Argonne Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

This was the last wine served with cheese at the end of an incredible line-up and still held its own. Lightly oxidative notes that is strikingly like a young Selosse Substance. Finish of manuka honey, sout cherry, bruised anjou pear. Very unique and excellent. 96+/100

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

A real treat to drink a Raveneau Clos firing on all cylinders. More overt fruit and more youthful than the 08 a few months ago. Beeswax and honey nose. Anjou pear, sweet lemon, mandarin orange palate. Needed some time in the decanter and glass. 94-95/100

Flight 6 - An incredible surprise at the end (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

A generous open at the end of an evening with many great bottles, this really deserved a longer decant. Highly concentrated Burgundian morelo cherry with a nose of sandalwood. Epic concentration but still tight. Drink now with a proper decant or hold. 95-96+

  • 1999 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This was opened at the end of an evening after many incredible bottles and deserved more air time but was still reasonably ready for business. Stunning autumnal leaf nose incredible power yet also agile. Palate a touch closed but did deliver classic roasted meat and black fruit. Long finish. 96+
