Introduction

Our annual Burger and Zin night at Bobby Van's. This year we skipped our usual white wine starter and instead had 4 100% Zins, and 1 Zin blend. 4 of the 5 wines were from California and 1 was from Washington State. Not that it made a difference, but of the 8 of us, only 1 got a bacon cheeseburger and of the remaining 7, it was mostly american cheese, with one swiss and one cheddar burger.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Turley Zinfandel Moore "Earthquake" Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

My final bottle of this vintage/vineyard, and it went out with a bang! A long finish, and still plenty of Zin like flavors. The bottle says 16.4% alcohol, but it worked here, as the wine never tasted hot. At this age, it was almost elegant. At least as elegant as a Zin can get!

  • 2019 Lagier Meredith Tribidrag 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

My last bottle of this vintage. I wish I had discovered Lagier Meredith's Tribidrag (their name for Zinfandel) sooner! 15.2% alcohol. Which was the 2nd lowest of the night, and it definitely tasted lighter than the other Zins. But it was enjoyed by all, even if it came in 4th out of 5 wines.

  • 2019 Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

At 16.6% alcohol this was the highest of the night. Everyone was looking forward to trying it and it didn't disappoint. Almost ruby port like with dark color a full body and very long finish.

  • 2020 Two Vintners Zinfandel Stonetree Vineyard 94 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Wahluke Slope

Part of a Burger and Zin night, and a little over a year since the last time I tried it. The surprise of the night as it was the group's 2nd favorite. 16.5% alcohol, but it carried it well.

  • 2022 Ridge Botticelli Vineyard Rockpile 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile

I may be being kind with my number score. Honestly while I like this wine, I don't see Owen Bargreen's 94 points. Part of a Zin and Burger night with my wine group and out of 5 wines, this came in 5th. Not a bad wine, but maybe out of place among higher alcohol 100% Zins. On the other hand, elegant could be a descriptor for weak and watery. I'll have to try another bottle under more favorable circumstances for this wine.

Closing

I think the favorite wine of the night was the 2007 Turley Zinfandel Moore "Earthquake" Vineyard. Followed, by (Surprise!) the WA State Two Vintners Zinfandel Stonetree Vineyard. The Martinelli was almost port-like and was 3rd, closely followed by the Lagier Meredith Tirbidrag. The Ridge Botticellii Rockville, unfortunately finished last. With the lowest alcohol and the only blend of the night (32% Petite Sirah), it just didn't show well against these high alcohol behemoths. A fun tasting, and a great time was had by all!
