  • 2023 Gottschuly-Grassl Grüner Veltliner Hagelsberg Reserve 86 Points

    Austria

The nose is fresh and lively with tones of green apples, pears, limes, white fruits, and a touch of acacia flowers. There is good freshness to the nose, but it lacks depth and complexity. The Medium bodied feel shows off the freshness of the nose with crisp, medium+ acidity. This is nice and fresh, but it also isn’t all that interesting or complex.

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Weinviertel

The nose is classic and vibrant with tones of limes, green apples, some white pepper, pears, nectarines, a touch of pyrazines, and some yellow flowers. This is lovely and balanced with good freshness that even shows a bit of tension. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and fresh with tart, medium+ acidity that shows a lovely mouthwatering quality. This is really good. All it really lacks is some depth across the nose and palate that could take this into another gear.

The lifted quality is spring-like with just enough herbal elements to let you know what the grape is. The Medium bodied feel shows off the freshness and lift of the nose with racy, high acidity. This is delicious and a great showing of Sauvignon Blanc from Austria.

  • 2021 Jurtschitsch Grüner Veltliner Urgestein 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

The nose is lively and fresh with tones of lemon oil, white pepper, green apples, peaches, white fruits, saline, and some white flowers. This is fresh and fun, but it lacks depth and definition. The Medium bodied feel shows off the freshness of the nose, while it also shows off the lack of depth. The Medium Bodied feel is balanced and fresh with crisp, medium+ acidity that is lively. This is nice and fresh across the nose and palate, but it doesn’t show off much complexity either. It’s a nice, affordable option if you want a Gruner that plays into the more classic style.

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

The nose is poised and with some freshness to the tones of white peaches, green apples, lemon peels, nectarines, white flowers, crushed rocks, and some saline notes. This has good lift and freshness, but it does lack a slight bit of depth. The Medium bodied feel is poised and fresh with tart, high acidity that has a bit of bite. This may lack a slight bit of depth, but its freshness is poised and open-knit. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and fresh with tart, high acidity that has some mouthwatering cut. This is fun, fresh, and very friendly. It doesn’t really need much (if any) aging and presents an upfront style.

  • 2023 Bernhard Ott Grüner Veltliner Am Berg 86 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wagram

The nose is balanced and forward with tones of peaches, white fruits, white flowers, green apples, and pears. This lacks depth and much definition past it being a fresh, white wine. The Medium bodied feel is fresh, but lacking on the mid-palate with crisp, medium+ acidity. This is a bit straightforward and non-descript.

  • 2021 Weingut Ecker-Eckhof Grüner Veltliner Kirchberg 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wagram

The nose is vibrant and poised with fresh tones of peaches, kumquats, lemon oil, crushed rocks, vanilla beans, saline, and white flowers. There is a more saline-driven take that is working really well, even if it lacks some depth. The Medium bodied feel is poised and fresh with crisp, medium+ acidity. The acidity has a tinge of sharpness and sting that likely won’t resolve with time, but everything else is balanced and fresh across the nose and palate.

  • 2022 Nigl Grüner Veltliner Freiheit 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

The nose is balanced and herbal with open-knit tones of green apples, pears, lemon peels, peaches, pyrazines, snow peas, crushed rocks, jasmine, and yellow flowers. There is excellent complexity with a laid-back coolness to the tones. The Medium bodied feel is poised and fresh with tart, high acidity that has some noticeable cut. This is lovely now and likely could benefit from a few years of aging. There is a slight sharpness to the acidity and some angles to the tones that can be rounded out.

  • 2022 Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner "Hefeabzug" 90 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

The nose is fresh and balanced with tones of kumqaut, pears, nectarines, sweet lemon peels, white pepper, saline, and some jasmine. There is good interplay between the peppery aspect and citrus, but there is a tinge of sweetness to the fruit that is a little distracting. The Medium bodied feel is fresh and balanced with tart, high acidity that makes your mouth water. This is fun and fresh, but maybe a couple of years can round out some of the youthful excitement.

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

The nose is immediate, fresh, and balanced with flowing tones of lemon peels, pears, a touch of warm oils, pears red apples, some petrol notes, white flowers, and jasmine. There is some lovely tension to the nose that is enticing and fresh while it also shows off some good depth as well. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and deft with racy, high acidity that makes your mouth water. This is lovely right now, but it feels like it has another gear it can give.
