Introduction

It is winter, so time to open some Bordeaux and check out how these three vintages are showing

Flight 1 - Introduction drink (1 Note)

  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Alc: 12%; Light gold, wonderful mousse

Intense aromas of brioche, freshly baked ciabatta and general autolytic notes.
Crisp acidity on entry supple mid-palate with plenty of intense flavours. There is a chalky, mineral bite that I enjoy with B-S. Lifted with a savoury undertow, the acid lingers throughout the palate. Depth and precision, yet with suppleness to the mid-palate, this is delicious and showing well.

Flight 2 - Three Vintages (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine de Chevalier 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Deep brick red with a savoury, earthy, dusty bouquet enhanced by liquorice, cedar wood, dried orange peel, blackcurrant, and undergrowth. The wine is surprisingly approachable, with chocolatey, furry tannins reminiscent of cocoa powder, balanced with fresh lemony acidity and flavours of liquorice, tobacco leaves and bitter chocolate with some semi-dried blackcurrant, black olive and plum preserve. Complex, medium to full-bodied, it has a long, intense finish and depth of flavour that, whilst drinking now, should work for medium-term cellaring. A touch of stone dust on the finish.
    A blend of 60% CS, 30% Merlot, 5% PV and 5% CF.

  • 2005 Domaine de Chevalier 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Deep garnet to brick red rim suggests some maturity. Somewhat subdued initially, but opens slowly to reveal Christmas cake, dark chocolate and spice with layers of ripe black and red fruits and the merest hint of tobacco leaves. A soft and undulating entry with excellent fruit concentration, rich texture and depth of flavours yielding blackcurrant, redcurrant, liquorice, dark chocolate (90%), more tobacco and dried herbs as seamless tannins and lively acidity provide support. Refined, complex and highly sophisticated, it promises continued evolution in the bottle.
    A blend of 55% CS, 35% Merlot, 6% PV and 4% CF.

  • 2000 Domaine de Chevalier 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Deep garnet transitioning brick-red and a hint of mahogany on the rim. Earthy umami bouquet with dry heather, marmite, dried herbs, and tobacco leaf with some liquorice, dried orange peel, and red berries that add interest. A well-structured wine with grippy tannins and lively acidity, it shows a mid-palate of dried fruit, undergrowth, wet clay earth, and cedar wood to reflect the nose. Elegant and still fresh it is drinking nicely and the tannins have integrated seamlessly into the wine's structure. Mature and should be enjoyed now and in the next few years, rather than kept. Didn't sweep me off my feet?
A blend of 63% CS and 37% Merlot.
