Introduction

This was the regular meeting of the big group. We had 16 of us at two tables for a night of Northern Rhones (1: CV,KB, ML, DA,JG/CG, JV/MV; 2: RF,JG,JP,MB,MZ/CZ,DR/DR) A new venue for us. Very good service, though the food was pretty average.

Flight 1 - Table 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2012 Moët & Chandon Champagne Grand Vintage 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Bitters, apple, ginger, lemon peel, saffron, brisk palate. I remain thoroughly underwhelmed by this vintage of GV. I have yet to crack any of mine. Would like to believe these one day might achieve something more, but not counting on it. 90+ to 91pts.

  • NV R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Small glass over 30 minutes. Creamy, nutty, toast, oxidative. In the 40 or so times I've have had this wine, I had never used the word oxidative in a tasting note. The story is that it was a Wine Bid bottle, and who knows how old and what storage it had. This was tired, oxidative - though not oxidized, and clearly not a representative bottle. No score.

  • 2018 Jean-François Jacouton Condrieu 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Floral, lychee, peach, citrus, citrus pith. Still quite good, though I'd venture a guess it was better a few years a go.

  • 2004 Alain Voge Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Dark red color, 3mm clear edge. Opened 3 hours beforeheand and recorked after. Drank a glass over an hour. What a great nose, just a killer perfume of violets, dried earth, leather, funk and red berries with an infusion of subtle blue fruits. The palate still has some room to evolve further, raspberries, blueberry, cured meat, leather, soil, dried spice, a little oak yet and some briary blood meal minerals on the finish. Last one, and wish i had a couple more to watch over 5 to 10 years.

  • 1998 Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark red plus color, 7mm transitional edge. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Pretty aromatics on the nose, lifted, floral, red fruits, red berries, dried earth, gravely minerality. As this evolves it brightens further showing bramly blackberries and mountain fruits. Very nice indeed. 94+ to 95pts.

  • 2010 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. There's somenice fruit here, ripe dark berries, minerality, but a lot of grip and the palate comes off a bit woody and rough. The nose is ahead of the palate by a good margin at this point. Will benefit from several years. Currently 89-90ish pts.
