  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 93 Points

    Not quite sure how this would show because these usually need a bit more time and the right food to show but this was fantastic! Recognizable house style here with good depth and intensity, peaches, plums aplenty with almond creme and wheat tones. Palate shows good integration but slightly on the younger side and will definitely hold/improve in the longer run.

  • 1999 Henri Giraud Champagne Grand Cru Fût De Chêne Brut Vintage Aÿ 94 Points

    Honestly did not know Henri Giraud was around for such a long time haha. Drinking superbly well today, slightly oxidative but that’s aligned to the house style. Bouquet delivering yellow apples, cream, yellow plums and honeysuckle while palate showing tropical fruit tones like starfruit, pineapples and yellow peaches amidst good depth and precision. Frankly this was just all-round superb and drinking really well!

  • 2002 Pol Roger Champagne Extra Cuvee de Reserve Brut 93 Points

    Champagnes are just different in magnum formats. Great starter to the evening with mouthwatering acidity and focus - great precision and depth here with yellow peaches, hay, cream, green apples and fresh plums dominating bouquet and palate. Drinking superbly now though no issues with aging this one further.

  • 1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 97 Points

    Insane provenance with this original release and it was drinking so darn well. Youthful exuberance combined with the complexity that only age can bring - old krug are simply so magical! Bouquet presents baked green apples, fresh apricots, hay, soy caramel and orange peel while palate has that tones of cream, smoky butterscotch and wheat. Super intensity and concentration on display here with a zippy finish - seriously what an awesome champagne this is. Right up there with the magnum of 85 I had earlier in the year.

  • 2006 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Avoided the premox curse although slightly advanced. Citrus bouquet of blood oranges, grapefruit and lemon curd alongside peanut skin, marzipan and honeysuckle. Palate reveals some umami tones along with yellow peaches, pineapple compote and chamomile. While slightly missing the highs that usually come with Leflaive chevalier, I put this down to the vintage and perhaps slightly the cork issues with Leflaive.

  • 2015 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Always a pleasure to try this cuvee. Expressive and electrifying bouquet with white flowers, nashi pear, cream, kaffir lime and sesame. Palate took a long while to open up but at the end of the night the layers had peeled back showing viscous textures and tones of blood orange, grapefruit, raw honey, pineapples and straw. Great minerality core here and it truly needs more time to flesh out. Outstanding in any case with a superlative finish.

  • 2017 Domaine Bizot Vosne-Romanée 97 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

    Next up in the Bizot pair, this was astonishingly delicious! Sensual and aromatic bouquet as per Bizot signature with violets, cloves, rosewater, bayberries and cranberries on full display in flamboyant fashion. Palate showing a lot more concentration and depth compared to the Marsannay with crushed raspberries, sarsaparilla, smoke and sadle on show in hedonistic fashion with a crazy good and long finish. This was an easy WOTN for the group with something like 6 out of 8 votes for this wine.

  • 2016 Domaine Bizot Marsannay Clos du Roy 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

    First of the reds and it was a Bizot pair. Beguiling nose here with florals and spiced fruits on display, cranberries, mulberries amidst the darker tones of plum and black cherries, the bouquet is crazy as usual with a sense of purity and transparency amidst all the concentration. Palate here shows cola and bubblegum concentration that melts into a textured and finesse mouthfeel - it’s unfair to judge this against any marsannay out there because of Bizot but this was a super treat!

  • 2015 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée La Colombière 96 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

    Almost as if in defiance and coming after the Bizot, this was a strong contender for WOTN, coming in a clear 2nd. Sensual and complete bouquet showing abundance of cherry compote, cranberries, hibiscus, black tea, aniseed and cardamon yet in transparent and pure fashion. Palate has this wine on complete seduction mode with pitch perfect sensuality and sex appeal - so effortless and pure yet so much concentration and power, a superb showing.

  • 2010 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Always a pleasure to drink Cathiard and this was showing plenty of promise as a potentially great wine in the future. This had the notable signature Cathiard imprint and oak treatment yet already showing very balanced and exuberant. Dark fruited bouquet full of spices, black cherries, rhubarb, crushed vanilla pods and sadle while palate registers lush mulberries, pomegranate and strawberry compote. Good elegance and finesse here but the oak is still a little unintegrated - this will be a winner in 5-10 years for sure!

  • 2009 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Again, a pleasure to drink Dujac anytime but this was similar to the Cathiard in the regard that they showed plenty of promise and potential. Fruit forward bouquet showing really ripe and bordering on candied fruit, with morello cherries, hawthorn and plum compote on display, supported by signature green potions from Dujac, sage, cloves and smoke supporting the fruity bouquet. Palate needed loads of time to get going and while it softened over 4 hours, it probably needed another day to really open up. Good concentration, fruit and acidity on the midpalate signifies that it’s one for the cellar for sure so keep this away for another 10 years minimum!

  • 2001 Christophe Roumier Charmes-Chambertin 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Rounding up the top 3 for the evening, this was firing from the get go, probably because of the vintage because roumier usually needs a lot more time. Hedonistic bouquet showing soft raspberries, wild strawberries, cigar smoke, sadle, violets, sage and some hints of savoury game meat. Palate exemplifies wild strawberries and bayberries in harmony with blood orange, meat spice and slight ferrous iron on the midpalate. Very well integrated already and silky at this stage - in a great spot now and don’t think there will be significant upside to holding this further.

  • 2017 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    Most fortunate to have this again within a month of last trying it and notes were fairly consistent with my last bottle. Aromatic and focused on the bouquet that was more spice forward with red fruits (plums and raspberries) supporting in the background. Palate has good purity with plums and bayberries here that’s supported by a good core of minerality and earth. Drinking fairly well today but will get loads better with more time!
